KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A Knoxville man was minutes from proposing to his girlfriend on a hike in Western North Carolina Friday when she was struck and killed by lightning.

"Everything went black. I was spun 180 degrees, thrown several feet back. My legs turned to jelly. My shoes were smoking and the bottom of my feet felt like they were on fire," Richard Butler said.

For a moment, he said he thought he was the only one hit by the bolt of lightning.

However, it was his girlfriend Bethany Lott, 25, who took the direct hit. She was hiking just a few feet in front of him.

"I crawled to her, rolled her over. They say she was gone automatically, but I tried CPR for probably 15 minutes," Butler says.

Maybe God was trying to tell him something. Too soon?

Where should I go during the middle of a thunderstorm?

Oh, I know! How about the top of a mountain!

Edit: It's a sad story but a pretty moronic thing of them to do, frankly.

Either they were not prepared by looking at the forecast, or a freak storm just rolled in. Nice, for you to assume they are moronic.

Back in the early 90s, I climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. While going up the mountain, I came upon a German lady who had just been struck and killed by lightning. Melted pieces of her red poncho were scattered all around her.

I don't think you really could, frankly. I have no intention of marrying my GF, but I couldn't imagine what something like this would do to me.

From what I can glean from the article, they were still ascending in the middle of the storm. Generally speaking, you want to be doing the exact opposite, and fast.

I don't think I could ever recover from something like that, that's just awful.
