Getting Robbed

Hi Everyone,

I've been thinking about this for a while now. I usually wear dress shoes, a heavy coat, and a briefcase with my fragile pc to class/work. Suppose, some thugs out of nowhere launching at me for a quick punch to rob me, what are some ways to defend myself. Let's make the grand assumption that they do not carry hand guns:

1. Pepper spray?
2. Pocket Knife, if so what kind?

Anything else? I don't think carrying a firearm is a good idea. So alternative suggestions would be helpful.

According to what I saw on my daily viewing of Oprah Winfrey, you are supposed to carry some side cash in a money clip to throw at the assailant's feet and then run away.

I wouldn't bother with a knife because by the time you get it open they might knock it out of your hand. Some good self defense moves are probably your best bet. Kicking the knees, punching the throat, etc.

Two fists and 2 legs.

Join a boxing/mma gym. Good workout, learn some self-defense, fun.

Getting out pepper spray probably won't help much vs a thug. Unless you develop some technique to whip it out and spray it in a matter of seconds.

hmm...I didn't think about that. It would suck if I point the spray the wrong way.

Where do you live? In many places (mostly urban and city landscaped) carrying defensive type knives is illegal.

Otherwise, this is your best choice ........

I'd say carrying your key in your hand to slash with/jab at eyes would be fine. Also, shouting and showing them your war-face would work.

You'll have a lot of people telling you to carry knives, get martial arts training, etc. That stuff usually doesn't hold up in a real mugging. Two of my friends were mugged recently and both were pepper sprayed before they knew it, and one had his throat ****. Don't think that the training will be your panacea. On the other hand, 78 year old women routinely beat ass on muggers. I'd say your best weapon if someone is confronting you is to hit them with the narrow edge of your briefcase and then split.

Actually, your best weapon is your wit that keeps you out of dangerous situations in the first place.

Sorry I couldn't resist.. "Everybody underestimates a kick to the groin"

Ha. Who knows maybe they'll feel sorry for you and leave you alone.

I'd go for the "hammerless" style so that you get fewer snags on your bespoke clothing.

Carry pepper spray if you think you'd feel safer. As far as a knife goes, there's an old saying that goes, "Bring a knife to a fight and you're going to get cut."

I have a hard time imagining that a guy who found a cute puppy photo to use as his avatar would even use a knife in a fight with an assailant(s) who probably had a weapon or two of his own.

Give them what they want. Even if they don't have a gun, it's incredibly dangerous to fight someone who has a knife. The odds are extremely good you'll end up cut, stabbed or dead. It's one of the first things you learn in martial arts/self defense. Besides, even if they appear to be empty handed, you don't know what they're carrying.

If, as you say, they jump you and pop you in the head, you're probably not going to be quick enough to defend yourself anyway. There are few situations where heroics are possible/the right answer.

Stuff can be replaced, but your life can't. And why get all those nice clothes torn and bloody?

So should I just curl into a little ball and say "take what you want, don't hurt me!"? Sounds like I'm making myself even more vulnerable.

well you could try leaping in to the air to land your taekwando ax kick if you like. My money is still on the dude with the gun though.

I got mugged once by 3 black guys in the middle of an empty parking lot, I stood my ground and they ended up only taking my cigarettes. After that when I thought about it, I think it was stupid of me to stand up at all. Just take my money because you never know what they are carrying and what they're going to do to you, and not just because they're black.
