Getting on an upward trajectory?

Ok not exactly sure where I'm going with this but as I'm working on a new job search I've been thinking about this. There are certain fields/jobs/situations that have clearly defined, or at least clearly existing, paths for advancement. As in, if you put in the time/effort, you will be at least here in X years if not better.

On the other hand, there are other situations where from day 1 it is clear that there is no potential to advance, regardless of effort or ability. I've had two jobs so far and they both fell into this category.

What advice do you have for finding the first category of jobs? I'm a big boy and if my situation ain't improving I'll do what it takes to make the next move. But it would be nice to find a job that could facilitate that process instead of constantly feeling the pressure to make moves

Sometimes it comes down to little more than politics and luck of the draw. But try to avoid companies where:

1) The company isn't doing well, or the industry isn't doing well
2) There is a large backlog of qualified people at your level, all waiting around for the next promotion.

If your company meets one -- or, God help you, both -- of those criteria, then good luck moving upward anyime soon. Assuming you're qualified (i.e., deemed capable of the next level of responsibility) and have put in the effort, those two roadblocks can still scupper your chances.

I really may be in the wrong industry ... OTOH which industry do these two statements not apply to? i need to get in one of these "elite" circles where people shove huge amounts of $ at you for no apparent reason: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-0...demptions.html
