KA - good call. I do see a few items closer in my price range. I like the look of the medium duffel (style 222 below) but am curious to know how that shoulder strap would hold up to some abuse and heavy loads. I'm using this for as much to find out about the multitude of brands out there rather than just a search for a pack.

Saw some interesting packs from Frost River on ACL a few days ago - certainly have the look I'm after except for the oodles of leather buckles and accountrements.

Cbird -Hulme and Duluth certainly have some good options. We're getting there in terms of look and feel. Add some darker material (think Barbour riding jackets), a few less leather straps and sturdy zippers, and we'd be there. Also Barbour has some nice things as well, but just not the simplicity I'm looking for.

I honestly don't know if I'll find what I'm looking for - and it may be in a yard sale in Skokie, IL, but I'd be willing to bet I'll find it sooner before later...

I have Filson small duffel #220 and use it all the time. Carry my laptop, notebook, etc comfortably around town and it's the perfect size as a "personal item" in addition to my rolling carry-on while flying. Have been thinking of getting the medium briefcase Filson for a while now but haven't had the need. Will probably pick one up tho as would like better compartmentalization.

If you like more safari and less military style, the bag should not be to dark. These hold-alls from Chapman bags come to my mind:

Plain and simple, in fine materials. And the shoulder strap will not let anyone down...
