The weather being extremely rotten in the Midwest (rain, high humidity when not raining + gusty winds) deflated my enthusiasm to the extent that I put on only ****** 50 miles last week

I have a Cannondale hybrid that I bought about three months ago and have put on about 600 miles.

I did the first couple of days of RAGBRI last week and I broke three spokes in two days. I had also busted two other spokes in the precedding two weeks. Someone on the ride told me this was an indication of a bad wheel.

Is it so early in the life of the bike to have a bad wheel that I should be complaining to the shop that sold it to me and demanding a free replacement?

Broken spokes occur on a bike with a heavy rider. If you are over 200lbs, and you ride your bike hard, you'll probably break some spokes early, esp. in the rear tire. For heavy riders, I caution that they avoid those wheels with minimal spokes (even if they look cool).

You can look for strong wheels that have strong spokes and can be double walled (ebay is good). Or, some local lbs guys can lace up a replacement wheel that is stronger than the stock one.

I also have a 2004 Fuji Track Pro for the velodrome (this one is in pieces, finally getting some decent parts on it). I will get some pics of it soon. I miss the track.

Unless you're really heavy (like 250+) or are abusing the wheel (jumps, hopping curbs), you really shouldn't be busting spokes like that especially on a hybrid.
I'd expect the shop to replace or rebuild the wheel.

And even if you are heavy, I'd expect the shop to replace. They shouldn't have sold you a bike that couldn't hold up.

Did my commute on the bike for the first time today. About as sweaty as I expected. 9.3 miles. We'll see if I'm up for going home this afternoon.

Hey, since my last bike (a bmx I've had for a couple of years) got stolen, I'm looking for a new one. Uni student living in the middle of town, so I usually use it for 10/15 minute distances. I do spend the summer at the coast, where I tend to ride longer distances. What kind of bike would you recommend for me?

I've never bought anything from pricepoint... are they alright? I've only had good experiences with jenson, speedgoat and competitivecyclist.

as an update: the only thing missing now are the shifters... my LBS told me they're working on it.
