I could only dig up two old photos of my bikes.

'94 Bontrager Race-Lite.
i21806_Bontrager1.jpg

It's built up with old-school XTR, Cook Brothers cranks, and a Ringle wheelset. I also have a '91 Bontrager Race with a Bontrager fork that is built up with old-school XT and top-mount shifters. I haven't ridden either Bontrager much since I got this:

'04 Seven Verve
i21807_Seven1.jpg

This picture is out of date, I recently upgraded to Avid Juicy Carbon discs and a Bontrager Race Lite wheelset. Such a sweet ride.

Don't have a photo yet, but just built up a Surly Pacer road bike with 10s Ultegra so that I could start putting some road miles in.

I started another thread regarding "casual" cycling shoes. Just something to throw on for an easy ride around the neighborhood--maybe to the farmers' market, kind of thing. A number of you were nice enough to give some advice.

One poster, sorry can't remember how, mentioned Five Ten. I hadn't thought of them since I thought they made only rock-climbing shoes. In fact, I still have a couple pair sitting around that haven't been used in more than a decad--yourr free if you want them.

Anyway, I found these, which look pretty cool. Anyone know anything about them? They fit one major criterion: they look cool. They have a rocker built into the last, they say. Would that be bad or good or neither?

Yes, but I'll try to help it out.

Here's my wife's ride. She just got it for her birthday a few weeks ago.
Cervelo RS with Ultegra RS in size tiny. Those are 650 wheels/tires.

My carbon bike. Look 555. Mostly Ultegra.

My Campagnolo bike. BMC SL01. Centaur with horror of horrors, Shimano pedals.

Nice rides - do both of you race?

Think I've settled on Speedplay Zeros.. now the question is Cromoly or SS.

I am devoted 24/7 to the needs of StyleForum, but yes, I am into cycling, both road and MTB.

Also consider getting a used bike...a bike is the kind of thing that has a high reject to gift ratio. At your budget, you could probably get an appreciably better used bike than new since the quality and weight improvements are still signficant up to the $1K (new) mark.

Nice Cervelo zippyh. I have the Soloist which is an awesome ride. I also have an Orbea Orca but have put many more miles on the Cervelo. Just a really smooth bike that fits me well. I'd like to try out the Cervelo S3 but alas, I've fallen from grace on bikes.

I am always amazed at the rides I see locked up casually on the street. There is a guy in the Ravenswood area of Chicago that parks his original Merckx One Hour edition at the Rockwell station from time to time. Only a handful of those were made by de Rosa decades ago.

The guy I was thinking of is definitely not you. You just have a similar online conversational style.

So true. I've seen some Tomassini and Colnago frames casually chained to lightposts. I'm assuming they survive only because they don't look as flashy to idiot bike thieves. A Cervelo might not last as long.

Bought a Trek 2.1 today. Won't be ready for me to pick up until next weekend though, so this stock photo will have to do for now:

Here's my road and MTBs. Both pretty old frames, but they've held up well.

P1010544.jpg

and my S&S coupled Indy Fab travel bike, it breaks in half and goes into a airline case. Off to Colorado in a few weeks.

i also strongly recommend bringing simple first aid items like band-aids, bandages and antiseptic wash. i had my share of nasty falls and they are imo necessities.
