Also, checking out what’s up on Facebook Marketplace is bad… We were sitting on the couch watching the Olympics, and every few few minutes I’m going, “Ooh, a Slingshot!” or “Hey, can I get this early 2000s Dean Colonel?”
No joke, I've found myself wasting time there looking at all sorts of stuff recently...

Speaking of old bikes, I bought my mountain bike ten years ago today.

My gravel bike’s derailleur hanger snapped last weekend. Niner had them in stock for 40% of the price charged by the usual derailleur hanger clearinghouses, and they arrived today. (I bought a spare.) About as painless a resolution as I could have hoped for.

Does anyone here know anything about the Ibis Hakkalügi? A rim brake version popped up in my searches, and it looks well-spec’d (full DuraAce and Enve fork).

Rim brakes are dead, friend. :)

Definitely a premium bike brand and frame, but rim brake has been out for a while so make sure it's in good condition. They're more known for their mtbs

Oh, I get those points. I haven’t looked at this yet, but don’t know anything about their road/cx offerings.

I was bummed that the steel Independent Fabrications bike I found yesterday turned out to be too big.

Also, I’m enough of a Luddite that rim brakes are fine. 😜

An Indy Fab would be amazing. Maybe look at finding her a nice steel rim brake, never know some old Colnago could turn up...

I’d love to find her something along the lines of my steel Rock Lobster, which is why the IF caught my eye.

There’s no shortage of really nice used bikes popping up around here. I almost snagged a Dean Colonel mountain bike for a few hundred bucks. Just need to keep checking.

Does it have the fist holding the rear brake cable? Because those are sick.

One of my old cx teammates had one and it was a good bike, but it will also be very dated and very much a race oriented cx geometry rather than something more gravel.

My younger kid has been begging for a better mountain bike (after being on a 20" rigid with 2.6 tires the last few years) so we got both a pair of these Fuji 24" hardtails for the kids.

On the one hand, it's amazing how much bike you can get for the money these days, but on the other hand, I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes for 60 lb humans with noodle legs.

Their last bikes were ~$250 from REI (looks like they are $400 now, so must have been on sale) and had mechanical disc brakes, 6 speed grip shifters, 69 deg head tube angle and worked pretty good for the trails we go on. They definitely didn't have low enough gearing to get up reasonably steep trails.

We were targeting $500 bikes (like this Scott Scale) and just looking to get a 50mm fork (at this price range typically suntour coil) and Shimano Tourney 7 or 8 speed.

The store didn't have the Scale with disc brakes, but did have the Fuji for just $150 more and it came with a legit air fork (80mm with completely unnecessary remote lockout), 2.6" tires, hydraulic disc brakes and Shimano Altus. Altus is a significant step up on Tourney, and the disc brakes are way better than mechanical for an adult, but for a kid, not sure it really matters. I would prefer a 68 degree HTA, but this one came with 70. Maybe for this size, that makes more sense but I really have no idea.

We did a trail ride today and the kids enjoyed new bike day, but I'm not sure they actually have a ton more capability. They still can't really get up long steep trails (I think the extra gearing is largely offset by heavier bike and bigger tires). They probably still get most of their squish from the fat tires rather than from the air fork. The shop calibrated the fork to their weights, but I still feel like it's too firm to make much of an impact. Larger tires and slightly better geometry should make a difference too on harder trails.

I'm not expecting them to ever get that into MTB, but given the excitement for bigger bikes, I'm hoping that at some point something clicks, and I have a riding crew.

A nice 40 mile ride today after the remnants of Debbie passed through over the past few days, at least for me. Wasn’t entirely sold on the tubeless system until today when I saw no less than 20 flats because of all the crap on the road while I had no issues, even with that stubborn puncture leaking sealant after a plug. Gonna call it and just replace the tire. But yeah, tubeless for the win.

It’s been too smoky here but it seems to clear a couple times each week. I got out for 51 miles this morning to celebrate my recent 51st birthday. The tradition of riding one mile for every year old I turn is a nice little reminder that I’m still alive. I’m hoping to make it to at least 80.

Topping off my tires today to go hit the beach.
My tire sidewall says "40-65psi".
I set my auto-inflator to 50.
It gets to 50 and everything exploded.
I head to the dealership a mile away and the tech says "supposed to be 35-40"
I explain away, and he said "yeah, that's for the tires, not the tube". At least that's what I think he said because his mouth was stuffed full of burrito.

So pissssed...
