General advice for finding own style (or specific advice for shoes)

I'm having some difficulty finding clothes. I consider myself of an indie/alternative/DIY subculture.

Yet I'm trying to find "dress" clothes for certain settings (e.g., nice dinners, meetings with people, weddings, funerals, etc.)
(not really business causal as I'm not in business)


I went looking for dress shoes and the guy at the store suggested Rockport, Clark, or Bostonian.
I had trouble picturing myself in any of them.

When you go to weddings and funerals, you should dress appropriate for the occasion, regardless of your personal "subculture". Also, all of those shoes are garbage.
