    Yes, I feel lucky to have gotten the Antibes at 60% off. It had a bit of minor shop wear, but nothing that concerned me. I wish the Hove were similarly discounted (it was at list price at Leffot).

    Jubei, the Hove is wild boar and on the mh71 last.

    I was thinking about this the other day and wrote a short blog piece on it - I think there's an interesting question as to value when we see these feeding frenzies, specifically these close-outs because the retail relationship is being discontinued. I believe we've seen it now with G&G at Barneys, EG at Bloomingdales, and perhaps EG at RL as well.

    At the end of the day, you have $1200 shoes that, for whatever reason, are unsellable at the retail price. But is that saying something about G&Gs in general, or about the specific models that Barneys chose to sell? Personally, I think its the latter. The inverted captoe does not have universal appeal, and two-tone shoes and spectators always have a limited audience.

    The shoes didnt sell at the $600-1000 range at Barneys. Why would someone think its going to sell in that range on eBay? The sweet spot for those models was $450-600. That's the price range that turned fence-sitters into buyers.

    Right - that's kind of my point. Besides you and me, Barneys models didn't hold much interest for the greater-NYC metro area.

    imo, i dont think it could be more simple. the vast majority of people have no idea what or who GG is. they are more likely to drop 1200+ on a pair of prada, lanvin or louis vuitton shoes, because they can justify it through the brand name value, weather or not the shoes are made as well as GG or EG or JL.

    for the vast majority of people who shop at high fashion department stores like saks, NM, bloomies or Barneys or BG, its all about brand name recognition, and to most of the public, GG doesnt have that right now. which is more than fine by me, though i wish tony and dean all the success in the world, and i have no idea if that is something they even want, name recognition like the fashion houses that is, im sure they want success. who knows.

    all that speaks not a word towards the value of GG to those who understand what it is, and what the quality of the shoes are. and im sure those are the majority of people who scooped up the GGs on sale. i doubt that all of sudden your average barney shopper noticed the drop and said, "hmmm, at 1200 i didnt like those, but at 489 i sure do!" heck no, i think it was people who know all about GG, but cant always afford the full price. fair as it me be, its still far from cheap, and they took the opportunity that was there.

    that would be my guess anyways.

    But doesnt it speak to the value in some way if, as you say, those who "understand what it is", have no interest in the product at the manufacturer's suggested retail price? Isn't that educated consumer basically saying to himself, "I don't think this shoe is good value at $1200; however, at $450, its a steal and I'll get a pair or two." Doesn't that say something about the inherent value of the product?

    And, in fairness, while I have no evidence to support this, I really doubt that the majority of buyers were those who can always afford the full price (although this may have been a typo in your post).

    In my case, I had long wanted some G&G but did not know my size and no one in Atlanta sells them. Thus, I waited until I was in New York and bought a pair at Leffot at full price. I then went by Barney's as I had heard about the close outs here, and decided it was worth a shot. Even though I would not have bought another pair at full price, at 60% off, I pulled the trigger.

    As for the Ebay sellers, I suspect they are opportunists who see a way to play the difference between Barney's price and what the usual price is. Basically, they are like ticket scalpers. I don't choose to support them. The fact that the models that are available are not to my liking for the most part makes this decision easier. ;)

    I think it's a case of an educated consumer saying to themselves, this is totally worth the price but I can't usually afford it. Now that I can't afford it I will buy as many as I can.

    It must've been a typo, what I meant was I believe the vast majority of these buyers were people like me who cannot usually afford to buy many GGs at full price and took this as an opportunity to shine.

    Well, in my case I am the biggest cheap ass on the planet, I never paid anything retail, if I know there is a sale in the future I would never pay retail... Sure, sometimes that means I will never buy "the shoe/suit" I want for 5 years (or never in some case, at this thus far...), but I am fine with that, not like I don't have enough clothe. I checked out the stuff I like and if they go on sale with more than 50% off, I might buy it, otherwise usually a pass...

    I think there is something to say about the options for the educated consumer as well.

    It is far easier for iGents like us to acquire GGs from England, saving a little bit in return, and getting the model we definitely wanted. At around 1k (ex. from Bespoke England) that is a fair price for the exact model i would wanted. At around 1.2K, i think GG MTO prices are quite fair, especially considering how much they allow you to customize.

    Having said that, i would not be persuaded to buy GGs at Barneys for 1.2K retail, in a model i didn't love and a size that was not my exact one. Honestly, as an informed Barneys customer, it would be hard to swallow buying GGs (or JL for that matter) at any other time than their yearly markdown sale.

    Like i mentioned before, i don't mind paying full price for a pair of GGs, without compromise in style and fit. Not necessarily a matter of value in the brand, but in the circumstance...
