Gash in my shoe

I lent my brother my shoes and they came back with a gash in the toe. It's a scuff about the size of a dime, maybe smaller, and it feels like suede. Its a black calfskin monkstrap shoe. Any suggestions for how I might go about fixing this particular problem with this shoe (for example., telling me not to lend my brother my shoes isn't terrrrrribly helpful.)?

What can I do?

Pics?

Depending on how deep the gash is or whether leather has actually been removed there are several options.

If it really is just a gash then you might be able to glue it back together by putting a small amount of glue in the cut with a toothpick and then taping it shut. Once dry, remove the tape and then apply plenty of polish and buffing.

If leather has actually been removed then you might be able to apply polish to the affected area and buff the hell out of it, hoping to dye the exposed leather and smooth it out. There are specialty products that could help here too.

Your best option though would be to take it to your local shoe repair shop. Hopefully you have one near you.

Judging by the many recent new threads on this, there must be a pandemic.

You shouldn't be lending shoes out anyways. Unless you two are the same size he will either cress your shoe because it is ill fitted, or stretch it out and no longer fit you.

Generally if it is a skuff you just have to use colored wax and cover it up. If it is a piece that is missing, you have to glue it back (do not peel it off if its still attached).

Not sure if anything can be done if a entire chunk is missing.

Theres not much you can do to fix leather, aside from stitching problems, etc.

Im across the world so I cant post pics at the moment; it happened right before I left. It's more like a deep scuff? Can I just apply layers and layers of wax and will it eventually smooth out?

When applying wax, do I use a toothbrush like thing as I would with creme, or just a chamois/rag?
