I will be going to a medical conference next month. one of the dinners is "gala". I honestly don't usually attend these dinners when I attend these conferences, but this time I think that I will. what would be the best thing to wear? dinner jacket or dark business suit?

What medical conf? The ones I rarely go to are dark suit affairs.

From my experience with with physicians, wear a business suit unless you are attending a conference for plastic surgeons. Then wear a tux.

I went to a gala last week where cocktail dress was advised. I wore a dark suit.

Unless the invitation specifically calls for black tie, wear a dark suit.

Dark suit is fine. Dinner jacket will probably be overdressed, unless you want it that way. The California tux will also likely be ok.

Usually for these kind of events, they will tell you to wear black tie if they want it that way.

For any of I.M./G.I./G.S./C.R.Surg. it has been a dark suit. Most of my friends dont even have a tux, incl me, so we make do with dark suits.

Regards.
PS. Ofcourse now come back and tell us how you were the only one in a dark suit...it had to happen!

If the word gala is used, one should wear white tie.
