I've read the thread by Peezy (10/30/09) about how to tell the difference between a fused and 1/2 and full canvassed suit, but what I am trying to figure out is basically what the difference is in terms of quality.

I am guessing that full fused suit would be the best quality, while fused suits are generally those cheap off the racks? or is it the other way around?

Fusing is when they use glue on the suit's inner lining. Fully canvased (aka full floating canvas) is where the inner canvas lining is sewn in, often with horse hair. The latter is the better, obviously.

the problem with fusing is that it can bubble and warp over time, especially if you take your suits to the dry cleaners a lot. While newer fusing isnt as bad as it was 10 years ago, a canvassed suit is still much preferred.

My chief objection to a fully fused coat is that the lapels typically look dead and flat.

How does one go about determining whether a suit is fused, half-canvassed, or fully-canvassed?

Pinch the cloth below the bottom buttonhole from both the inside and out. Gently pull the layers apart. If you feel a third layer inside, then the coat's fully canvassed.
