Furnishing new apartment

Hi, I will need to furnish my new apartment soon, mostly the living room. I loved how Patrick Bateman's apartment looked in American Psycho. Obviously I can't afford that on a 100k salary but it's that minimalistic style that I'm going after. I was thinking of just going with ikea for my bed. I'm going on a budget and please take my salary into account. I live in San Francisco, CA if that helps. Thanks!

Scour the interwebs as if though your future comfort depends on it. (As it well does.) Dig deep into the ebays and the craigslists. Find what you like and make no compromises in obtaining it in regards to persistance and patience rather than economy. Wait for sales in the stores. Don't settle for something and simply sleep on your floor until you come by that which you want at a fair price.

I think I am missing something, 100k is a lot and you can afford some good stuff. It may take a while and something's may not be as high a quality at first. But you can mix high and low priced things and make them look good.

I thought the same thing but was waiting for someone else to question how 100k = poor, esp considering he is single with no kids.

I dont think so that with this salary you can decorate your apartment. To do such kind of things a person should have an interest and also have lots of money which he/she will spend to fulfill their wish. I saw many peoples who spend a bundle of amount just for decorate their rooms and here you are talking to decorate the whole apartment.

$100k, without anything saved up, in a city like San Francisco, is not nearly as much money as you might think. One bedrooms in the Bay Area look to be around $3,000/month. Then, he's got to pay for a car and a parking space, so there goes another $500-1,000/month. His after tax salary is going to be about $65k, which means his monthly take-home income is going to be around $5,500. So, after paying for his home and transportation, he's only going to have $1,500-2,000 a month to spend on food, utilities, healthcare/insurance, clothing, entertainment (i.e. dating, since he's single), savings, etc.

A single Barcelona chair, without the ottoman, in a basic leather, is $5,000. So, outfitting a whole living room with similar quality pieces is clearly an impossibility.

My advice is to buy one or two nice pieces, and get the rest from Ikea and the like. Start with a Barcelona chair and ottoman, if you like. Every year, you can replace some of the disposable stuff with real, high quality items. Better this way than buying a bunch of middle-of-the-road stuff from Room & Board and BluDot that is too expensive to throw out, yet not nice enough to want to keep forever.

I love my white-colored sofas from IKEA, known as Ektorp. They includes come off for cleaning, and when you're tired of white-colored, they have 15 more options to select from and it is inexpensive too.

More importantly, the aesthetic is completely outside what the OP is aiming for. The Karlstad or Soderhamn look like they'd fit the bill better. However, Ikea sofas tend to look pretty awful in person, and the prices really aren't that great. We had one when I was in law school. Ugliest and most uncomfortable couch ever.

Add to that, they are often cheap interpretations of much more important work. They in fact diminish that work because more people have seen the copy than the original.

True, but they are never actual facsimiles or counterfeits. If you are on a budget, Ikea can be a viable option. It was for much of my 20's.
