Funny Man purse situation

In the campus bookstore they have cubby holes where you are supposed to leave your backpack or whatever before entering the main part of the store. They let girls slide with their purses though. So I was putting my backpack in the cubby, and a guy walks in and is asked to put his messenger bag in there too (theres a guy standing at the door telling everyone to put their stuff in the bag). Well the guy says he doesnt want to because he has his laptop among other things in the bag. They demand that he put the bag there. Heres how the dialogue went down...

Guy: "That girl just walked in and she didnt put her purse in the cubby, why do I have to "

Clerk: "Thats her purse, women can keep their purses with them"

Guy: "Well this is my purse and I would like to take my backpack with me"

Clerk:"No sir, thats not a purse. Thats a bag and you have to put it in the cubby or leave the store"

Guy: "Thats the most sexist thing Ive heard. Why can women carry their purse into the store and I cannot carry my purse? Thats like saying (points to a tall girl whose on the basketball team) that she should just quit basketball because shes a girl"

At this point the manager comes over and asks whats wrong and the guy explain the situation and goes on about how its sexist that they wont let a man take his purse in yet they allow women

then the guy makes another example by pointing out that some guy in the line is wearing a bright pink Lacoste polo and shouldnt be because hes not a girl

It was jus kinda funny and at the same time..i think he had a valid point..why cant men bring in their messenger bags to places where women are allowed purses wiht out checking?


They ended up letting him in with the bag..

sometimes i have a totebag with me as my "purse" and they've made me leave it in the cubby holes, even though i said it was my purse. so yeah its super annoying. thats awesome that he protested though.

Just put some "white owls" in your messenger bag and tell them its "that time" of the month. They'll have to let you carry it in.

While it's sexist - it seems a weird place to have your own personal Thermopylae - I wouldn't want to be "the guy who argued his right to the man-purse."

It's like suing to get onto an all-girls sports team - even when you win, you still lose.

Swimming? Yes.
Field hockey? Not so much.
