Full length coat to 3/4's?

I just inherited from my father this beautiful full length overcoat. I've never worn a full length coat, and I think it looks a little stodgy for my tastes. I'm pondering taking it to my favorite tailor and asking him to cut off about ten inches from the bottom (as well as fit the waist), and turn it into more of a 3/4's. I think it increases the versatility, and makes it more casual - which is more in line with the rest of my wardrobe.

So, the question is this: has anyone ever done this? How did it turn out?

I don't think it's a easy as chopping of 10 inches from the bottom. Because of the buttons, pockets, vents, silhouette... the entire coat may need to be recut and sewn or else the proportions and balance will be off. It's doable but not a simple job and may not be worth the expense to you so ask a knowledgeable tailor beforehand.

probably depends. if its a coat the otherwise fits, but you want a 3/4 style and its full length, the proportions should be fine. the alteration is probably doable.

if its too long to start with (i.e., the jacket is a 42L and you wear a 42S), it's very ill-advised.

that being said, i don't think the alteration would be worth the money. just keep the overcoat in your closet and get a cheap but stylish 3/4 coat for casual events.

This reminds me of the gold Rolex thread. If it's a "beautiful" overcoat, please hold on to it and start wearing it when you are comfortable doing so.

Guys, I hear you, and god knows I was asking for it. It's on my tailor - if he thinks it'll look good, it's going under the knife. If he slaps me across the face (a very real possibility with this gentleman), it will go to a wearer with more refined tastes than myself.

I'll let you know how it turns out.
