Leaving aside the clothes for a moment, it's fascinating what changes and what stays the same in a city over the decades. Broad Street has a different feel to it now, though it took me a moment to figure out why (pavement is wider, different traffic markings/parking) but the view over Magdalen Bridge down the High Street is near-identical today. But what struck me most was how filthy all the buildings look in those photos. At some point in the intervening decades (probably the 70s or 80s, I'd guess), everything must have been seriously sandblasted clean.

Can someone explain these trousers to me. How would you describe this fit? There doesn't appear to be any taper to the leg and they all appear to have a high rise.

They all appear to be woll, cuffed, one back pocket, single pleat, verticle pockets...is this right? What am I missing?

Is anyone still making trousers in this style?

Do they just have an appeal becaseu they are in old photographs?

Any thoughts?

I imagine the chap with the Hitler moustache might decide to shave it off rather soon.

A century or more of coal soot from countless fireplaces I guess. In London they only just finished cleaning St Paul's a year or two ago - it looks like a different building now, probably back to how it was in the 18th century.

I think you're describing "Oxford bags". Don't know of anyone making rtw trousers like that now - they'd probably look a little costumey in any case. Fuller trousers, but with a bit more taper than those in these pics, still look good imo, very grown up and comfortable. There is extensive discussion of the perfect trouser over on the London Lounge

Exactly. I thought they were more prevalent in the 20s. But this documentary evidence proves otherwise, at least where they originated.
