I love the irony. This guy is probably the most famous living/contemporary American writer in the world, he didn't even finished High school, lived in the street for a while and did some time. Not really the classic Ivy circles eh ?

I said famous not best - which is a matter of taste and personal preference BTW. In France, and i think all over Europe, he is more famous and popular than the two writers you quoted.
Fame would also seem to be a rather subjective opinion as well. After all only one of the authors named has won the Nobel Prize, and if you wish to go only by how well known someone is, I severely doubt that Ellroy is more famous at this point that George RR Martin, whose Game of Thrones is now an international phenomenon.
