I'm just waiting for someone to go all meta on this thread and post a hermes or ferragamo tie with a sleeping scene.

So my HC ties arrived today and Jason explained a bit to me what "soporific" means.

So, yeah, you already know the SC, but the tie is new as well as the PS and I look sexy with my new tie.

Holdfast, you're gone my friend. My apologies.

That's cool. Figured it might be a bit beyond the borderline of what you were looking for in this thread.

Though I must admit I don't really see the intrinsic appeal of such ties; there's a really broad spectrum between crazy and coma-inducing, with vast swathes of that spectrum being perfectly acceptable in any social or business context. Put it this way, I wouldn't think twice about wearing that tie to hypothetically meet the Queen (probably as good a litmus test for these things as I can think of) and I'm sure she wouldn't bat an eyelid at seeing it.

Purely in terms of tie-appeal, I personally like Elio's the best so far in this thread, with Clags' second.

I'm just waiting for someone to go all meta on this thread and post a hermes or ferragamo tie with a sleeping scene.

It did actually cross my mind to wear a blue Versace tie with a starry night on it, then realised I don't own it any more... the troll would have been too epic.

What can be more sleep inducing than a plain navy 7-fold? This look was inspired by Prince Charles, the master of soporific dress.

I like the outfit, and the tie doubtless qualifies... but I'm not sure I'd describe Charles as a sober dresser. Lots of his outfits are fairly dandy IMO, albeit still very much within a British establishment context.

It’s worth noting that even in the lengthy thread devoted to the topic (linked upthread) there is no unanimity on what counts as a ‘soporific’ tie and how such ties relate to SF-style ‘conservative business dress’. Personally, I was surprised to find many glen plaid/POW ties in that thread, as I have difficulty thinking of any plaid, even one as staid as POW, as ‘soporific’.

Agree about Charles. (I'm thinking of things like his penchant for double-breasted shawl lapel vests and the like.)

Cheers,

Ac

Man, there are some hippie-ass ties in this challenge. Teal? Zig-zag knits? Cut your hair and get a f***ing job! :D

SB, is this your first non-blurred photo? I think it's the first I've seen. If so, you mind giving your reasons for coming out? I believe it was you who remarked that you understand reasons people would want to remain anonymous, and understand reasons people would not mind; however you thought it was interesting that people might switch from one to the other. I'm interested to know why your change of heart?
