Freudenberg Calf - how does it match up against other fine $$$ leathers?

I'm talking about the black Freudenberg Calf that Meermin uses to make some of its handwelted shoes. Can you really tell the difference? Does it live up to the hype? How does it match up against, say the leather used in C&J handgrade shoes? Or where would it fall in the spectrum? I am assuming that it is not on par with the leather you find in Edward Green or John Lobb shoes, but I would be very intrigued if it even approaches that level for the price Meermin offers. Seems too good to be true, and it probably is. What's the catch?
