French Cuffs and Tie Bars: Two Unrelated Questions

I have smaller-than-average hands, which makes playing the piano rather more difficult. They tend to look like little crab pincers peeking out of a shell in any of my button-cuff shirts. I'd like to wear shirts with French cuffs, but fear that the extra weight at the wrists will only exacerbate the issue. Tips, advice, thoughts?

I like the way that tie bars cause the knot to protrude, drawing attention to the best part of the tie. How formal an outfit overall must one be wearing in order to put on a tie bar? Can one be worn even with loafers? Moreover, can a tie bar and a tie clip be worn simultaneously? Should they be?

Thanks, bye.

Get smaller french cuffs.

I don't wear tie bars, but wearing a bar and a clip together is just overkill. Like wearing suspenders and a belt.

I try to wear tie clips whenever I wear a tie. Casually, I have a few tarnished brass ones that look great with more casual outfits.

It sounds like you're wearing your cuffs a little longer than necessary. Alter them shorter, at or just behind the wristbone. Also, try adjusting your cuff button to fasten your cuffs tighter or if you're having your shirts made, have the cuffs made with a smaller diameter.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
