I'm thinking of ordering an umbrella from Fox Umbrellas, and I emailed to find out if they would be reducing the price by 20% considering I'm order from and having it delivered to Canada.

    The replied and said:

Does this make sense? They're basically saying that shipping the umbrella from England to Canada costs more than 40 pounds, and the VAT that they're charging me (which I don't think is allowed, is it?) is going towards subsidizing the cost of shipping?

When it gets here, I'll still have to pay duties and so on.

Am I the only one that's "wtf" about this policy?

Sounds a bit wacky. I recently ordered some Tricker's boots from Pediwear and they deducted VAT and did not charge for shipping. The umbrella is a long item but those boots w/ wooden shoe trees were very heavy so I can't image that the shipping cost would be hugely different. And I don't they meant to say the VAT they were charging is offsetting the cost of shipping directly, but that because they were undercharging for shipping (supposedly) you are paying less than the real cost (ie. you pay for {item + discounted shipping + VAT} instead of {item + full cost of shipping + VAT}).

I get that somewhere in there they're saying that although they're not reducing the price by VAT, I'm not really paying for it since their low shipping cost makes up for it.

I just don't really believe that; I prefer all my costs to be very clear and itemized. At the end of the day they could just be pocketing the VAT for themselves, since I don't see how an umbrella could cost much more than 40 pounds to ship.

If they are not shipping it by Royal Mail, then yes, the shipping is more than GBP40.
I forgot how much SAB charged me, but it was not cheap.

If they file for VAT refund and pocket the VAT... that is likely not allowed.
On the other hand if they simply don't file for VAT refund and pay the VAT, I don't think they are breaking any rules.

Either way it would be reason enough not to buy from them (at least for me).
You can try the Armoury since they also carry Fox umbrellas.

I think it is more on packing not shipping method.
Mine SAB all shipped by Postal Office, but they pack it in a box, never have a problem for them to travel from England to Hong Kong.

Ok, so the consensus is that it's really expensive to package and ship umbrellas, so their policy might not be that bad. Well, unless you're buying something that's a few hundred pounds, then you're screwed.

How do you ship an umbrella? Where does the label go..? I'm going to have to look into this.
