What we learned today: Beating Mercedes requires changing the ground rules on short notice. I suspect that if Pirelli hadn't mandated higher tire pressures, Valtteri would have won. As it is, he gets to rue being in front when it came time for the second pit stop.

I mostly dislike Red Bull, but it's a shame that they failed to give Max a generally competitive car this year. He and Lewis should be duking it out up front.

I don't even know how they're going to regulate that. It's part of the PU mapping so in theory, the quali mode can be used during the race.

A requirement to use the same mode in quali and the race effectively means that they won't use quali mode. The PU was designed to support very limited use of the higher-stress modes, so unless they want to risk PU penalties, they'll be stuck with race mode for both sessions.

But teams can run the quali mode for a lap during the race and basically say it's part of their top performance race mode. Only way to effectively ban this is to only allow 1 mode for the entire race weekend.

My reading of the article suggests that the technical directive will do just that.

The conspiracy theorist/cynic in me says that this Ferrari using the FIA to nuke Mercedes/the other teams. Their PU is down on power this year and they want to put a damper on everyone else.

The optimist in me says that this may actually make for more exciting races if teams have to gamble on engine modes for the entire weekend and find the balance between blowing the engine and being slow.

We should not neglect the perma-haters at Red Bull. Apparently Honda is incredulous about the Merc party mode.

I guess it was inevitable that we would get an actually dull race.

All 10 teams signed up for another 5 years. Here's hoping Ferrari continue being crushed by Mercedes or RB or possibly McLaren.

I'm irritated that Ferrari have apparently retained their bullshit veto

And their longstanding payment. I hope they never win another championship as long as they continue to get the veto and LSP.
