Formal apology to TheTieBar.com + Wool Tie Review.

I have recently made some remarks about thetiebar.com ties on this forum portraying them in a rather negative light. I was unimpressed with their skinny ties, mostly how they tie the knot and also in the quality of the silk. After posting my comments I have been contacted by Greg, the owner of thetiebar.com company. He was very polite and asked me why I was so negative about them and how could they improve their service. He also offered to return the money for all 3 ties I bought before, which I refused. After going back and forth via email he offered me to try one of their regular ties (not the skinny ones) for free and let him know what I would think. I accepted on the condition that if I liked the tie, I would pay for it.

To make a long story short, the tie arrived yesterday and I must say I was very pleased with it. So pleased, that I decided to post a review on SF. I ordered a blue 100% wool tie, 3.5" wide. Below are the pictures of the tie. As you can see, the knot is pretty good and the material is very good for a $15 tie. Also, I've included pictures of a J. Crew and T&A ties for comparison.

I would like to apologize to thetiebar.com for my negative comments earlier and I'd like to take them back. After talking to Greg I realized that they are a small company and are very passionate about what they do; I respect that. I think their ties are a great value as long as you stay away from the skinny stuff. Of course, they aren't for big-timers, but the quality is there and I would recommend this company as a good starting point.

My tiebar ties are all great. It is hard to get a good tie knot out of a skinny tie.

I'd like to hear more about this. In what way is the weave weird?

I've heard several SFers claim that all knit ties are pretty much the same, regardless of brand and price. If that's true, then 15 bucks would be hard to pass up.

Silly question: is this also known as a "Prince Albert" knot?

If so, I've been using it on some of my skinny ties lately, too. I wish I could find a better solution.

The Albert Knot is the double four-in-hand knot. Which is just the four in hand with another wrap around.

yeah, I just ordered a couple of their wool ties as well as two pocket squares and am pretty pleased with them.

Exactly.

Just another wrap around which adds the needed bulk in the knot.

The tie I received had a much more flat, regular, diamond-like weave without the "nibs" at the edges. It's hard to describe and I can't take a detailed photo right now, but it looks much more machine-made to me. I'll take a photo when I have time.

I own a navy knit tie from thetiebar. It's the only knit tie I've owned since Jr. High, so I don't have much to compare with it, but I like the texture a lot. My only problem is that it's longer than it should be - like maybe I got an extra long by accident, so it's hard to get the ends to line up right if the neck liner is in the right place. But I intend to buy another in grey or brown.

Here's a close up that shows the weave. The color isn't close to accurate - the tie is actually a rich, dark blue.
