Don't know how many people on here ski seriously, but thought I'd give this a shot anyway.

Basically, I'm looking for a new pair of skis and hoping some people on SF can provide a couple recommendations. There must be a few hardcore folks out there, right?!

I'll be skiing at Whitewater (near Nelson, BC) for 2 months this winter and need to upgrade my boards from my early 2000's Salomon X-Screams. I'm an advanced to expert skier, and want something largely geared to powder/freeride on- and off-piste, but still capable on the groomers and chopped pow/crud for those dry days. I'm 5'11.5" tall, and about 160-165 lbs., so don't want an uberstiff ski. Maneuverability (ie snappy turns) is a bonus as we do a lot of tree skiing out there. I'm also interested in getting trekkers and starting to do some day-trips into the backcountry after taking an avalanche education course. I don't have to have "this year's model," 2008 or 2007 models are fine if they fit my needs.

So far, the only ski I've found that appeals to these requirements is the Rossignol Bandit B3 (from 2007), but I can't seem to find anywhere online that has them in stock (as they're from 2007).

Any SF recommendations for skis to check out?

Thanks!

Hi there - I was an avid sponsored skiier (raced and instructed) but have since toned it down to 1 week of "good" skiing a year, usually Vail or Utah.

I have had a good dozen pair of skis over the last 10 years and the only ones that have stuck out are the ones I currently use: the Atomic Metron 9s. They are mid-fat with amazing turning control and can handle the pow as well as carve up the groomers. I know Atomic also makes 10s and 11s which are likely slightly stiffer. They also make 5s which would be softer.

Try to demo them and let me know what you think, the binding technology is quite something else as well. I'm getting pumped just talking about it. . . .13 days until my flight to Vail

I've been skiing for a while now, and if you aren't opposed to it, you might look into some of the all mountain twin tips. They aren't just for tricks anymore. I have a pair of 185 Volkl Bridges and I'm about your size (5'10, 175#), and they are a lot of fun all over the mountain. Of course, you can't hold an edge as well as some of the strict all mountain skis but they are pretty easy to whip around while not getting too chattery at higher speed. They also have a pretty wide waist which will come in handy in BC.

Of course if its possible demo as many skis as you can before you buy.

^^ Yea, I think I'm just gonna wait till I'm out there to demo a bunch and then decide.

Nordica Hot Rod. I think they have a few models now, I have the Top Fuel. I had never had an all mountain ski before and had these given to me after I quit racing and was coaching. the performance of the ski on groomers was actually similar to a race ski in terms of responsiveness. Then you get the ability to plow through the crud.

I highly recommend them.

Volkl Supersport 6 stars...I've had mine for a few years and they are spectacular.

Edit: Saw you want more of a powder ski...maybe these are not for you.

I ended up with a pair of Movement Thunder's, and switched to Telemarking!

Got in alot of sweet tours over the past couple months. For those who are curious about tele-ing, I totally recommend it. Takes a few days to learn, but if you're a strong skiier it comes pretty quickly. And, it's sweet in pow and the backcountry.

Line Prophet 100, Rossignol Scratch BC (s5 now, I think), Salomon Gun, 4frnt MSP/VCT, PM Gear BRO, etc.

If you raced, you don't want a noodle. Get the Prophet 100s. It's my current setup (marker dukes/179 prophet 100s/bd ascension skins) and it climbs like a billygoat and it's a joy on the way back down.

I roll on some race stock salomans most of the time from my racing time in high school. at 165 (maybe 168) they are a little long for slalom for my 6'2 height but they may be a good length for you.

The turns are definitely snappy (15m radius)...when you lock the edges in and push it, they will just launch you out of the turn and thus I have grown accustomed to skiing all-mountain on race skis.

You may find them too stiff though...

I am. I live the double life of front range skier and corporate warrior. It's a challenging dichotomy.

Likewise. Its not fun, but someone has to do it. I could not only tell by your suggestion of Bros....but also because you suggested the only suitable skis in this thread (the pocket rocket and bridge suggestions were close, but no cigar. Way too much of a park ski.)

I hope you don't take offense to this, but judging by this post, I hope it has been a long time since you have been in high school. Most people I know that are 5'11"and between 165-185lbs ski AT LEAST 179cm. And they are all people on serious college racing teams. 15m radius? The majority of skis these days are 20+. I ski a lot. Anywhere from the poconos of PA, to New England, to Alta/Bird in Utah to Alaska. I would suggest, based on your height and weight, something around 179-189. Like Jefe said, the Rossignol S5-S7 are all good. The 4FRNT EHP is great. K2 obSETHed in 189 is great and it skis short because it has rocker (long explanation if you don't know what it is...basically think of it as some of the tip and tail off the snow, so less effective edge) and can be had for $350 brand new. If you are a little more spendy, definitely get a PMGear Bro 183. If you want something wider (think 115-125mm) and stable, go for a Surface Live Life 2, or a K2 HellBent. And that is my 19 years of experience in ski tech crap
