They really shouldn't be worn anywhere outside of the pool/beach/boat. Then you'll just look like every other hipster with a pair of Tom's.

http://www.swims.com/#/shoes I posted them for feedback last summer and got roasted. However, despite not being SF approved, I wear mine in the summer with shorts all the time and I love 'em.

+1 for boat shoes. If I don't feel like sandals I'll wear boat shoes.

+1. While the aversion to bare feet is well understood, you're at the pool/beach, where there are typically substantially more offensive body parts exposed.

I get the whole wanting to look nice bit, but you're at the beach.

have a virgin strawberry dacquri and relax...no one is looking at your feet.

I can't believe some guy on here said he wears wingtips to the beach.

Weird that anyone would think that it's harder to relax with some sneakers or some boat shoes on (which may I remind people are meant to be worn on the ocean) rather than ugly plastic flip-flops? Is it also easier to relax and enjoy a drink with an ugly hawaiian shirt than with a nicer gingham one?

Point is - these are not mutually exclusive so it's a silly argument.

probably not all that different...just hate the brand and the people associated with it. Tom's is for profit marketing gimmick.
