I don't get what is so spectacular about that goal.
He just hammered the ball onto the goal and hoped for the best.
Given the unpredictable trajectory modern balls made from palstic have at high speeds that specific ball hitting the goal had less to do with skill and more to do with luck.
Sure it's nice to look at but there are better goales scored in every major football league at every single matchday.

Oh. Ok then. A guy demonstrates a perfect technique for a shot from distance and its just luck. You know, playing indoor soccer I was once on the half way line and had at it, I toe poked the ball, which went way up and then uncharacteristically dipped hard, hit the top of the goal mouth, and went in: that was luck. The goal in that vid was superb technique, and it went in because it was hit perfectly by a guy that has spent most his life training within the sport. You should learn to appreciate quality when it happens.

Anyway, this is more than I should bother with, but how about Luis Figo's greatest goal? Was this luck or just because he was a world player of the year it gets credited as skill? You might learn to appreciate talent.

That's a good'un too.

It's true Louis. Keeping those long balls down is very, very difficult.

That guy has played 9 seasons of professional football, mostly at mid to lower tier clubs of second rate leagues.
He never made it to the first squad, he is no specialist in freekicks or anything that requires a perfect technique of hitting a ball with great precision.
In fact he has only scored 10 goals and only a single one from greater distance, which is the one you have linked us to.
Paired with the fact that modern made of plastic balls have a totally unpredictable trajectory at high speeds which is proven by tons of dreadful looking attempts by players who have repeatedly proven their class at the highest rate of competition, it's safe to say this guy got lucky.
Sure, it's exactly what he wanted to do and it looks nice in a youtube clip but he will never score a goal like that again, because, once again, the shot hitting the goal was luck.
To me the best goal in years should have something to do with true skill,

You can't compare the goal to the one of Figo because Figos goal was scored with a ball that accelerated more poorly and the trajectory was way more stable back in 2000.
Also, Figo was one of the greatest players of recent years, who showed his technique more than just once, which makes it much more likely his goal was skill and not luck.

Watched the PSG game yesterday night. Thought they looked quite weak in the first half but then they suddenly started scoring on every corner in the second half. I am not sure if they really are a strong team or if it was the Greek opposition just collapsing.

I will watch Arsenal tonight and really looking forward to a good display and 3 important points from what may be a tough away game. Napoli vs Dortmund is the other game in the group and is likely to be the best match-up of all tonight.

It's great to have the Champions League back!!

Very much enjoyed the Madrid beatdown of Gala yesterday - although the first half was far more in Gala's favor than the media is making it out to be. After Isco's goal though (and it was a pretty darn good one), Gala's resolve just collapsed.

Napoli Dortmund is my game today. Hoping Higuaín is on fire and just further shows how foolish Madrid were to sell him. I guess I'll pull for Arsenal too for the same reason w/ Özil.

Fifa 14 on PC anyone? (romafan and that other guy, don't worry, I won't bring any Fifa talk in the football thread)

You have to feel badly for Elche. A point against Real Madrid would have meant a lot to them and their supporters. Instead, Pepe happened.
