We live in an area hit by natural disasters (and the world is coming to an end, clearly), and I'm thinking it couldn't hurt to have 30-60 days of imperishable food on hand. It rains a lot here, so rain collection would be the easiest and most cost effective way to store water. Do you store items for emergency situations?

Probably a troll thread, but I'll bite. I have an emergency kit in the house. Not months' worth, but enough water, canned or freeze dried food, personal items, and other necessaries for a week or so. Batteries, candles, rope, etc.

Make friends with the nearest mormon--they've got your back.

I was asking in earnest. I'm not talking about preparing for EMPs or whatever they prep for on Doomsday Preppers - just taking general precautions. I have the beginnings of an emergency kit that I am assembling. A lot of people store these in their car in case they need to walk home, but since I work 7 miles from home I can't imagine a realistic scenario for which I would need much more than a change of clothing and a means of personal defense.

If one can afford it I see little downside in storing some food and water in the house that could get you through 30 days.

I was mildly serious. Mormon's have some sort of religious obligation to hoard food for their families, and that then extends to hoarding food for non-Mormon neighbors and friends who might not be enlightened enough to do it themselves.

I am mormon... and yes you are right... though it's not exactly a religious obligation. We are told to do it, but it isn't a commandment (I guess maybe obligation is a good word for it). It's not about prepping for doomsday necessarily, it's just about being responsible parents.
