Florscheim - what happened?

After having nothing in my closet but black shoes I'm thinking of getting some burgundy longwing Bluchers. Was in the mall for another job and just ducked into Florscheim (yes yes I know) just to see what they had.

Now remember Florscheim has a pedigree that goes back decades and is even mentioned by Jake aborted in 'Chinatown' when he "lost a goddam Florscheim shoe" when he got caught in the water run off.

They have some longwings but when I said the c word (cordovan) the fella looked at me like I was speaking Romulan. The longwings they have LOOK nice enough but seem to be made in that paper thin leather with the glossy shiny wafer thin coating. What happened to this once great shoe maker? Do they not have a top line any more with real calf leather and Cordovans?

Sounds like "yes yes you know" what happened

no, they do not make cordovan shoes, unless you mean the Ducky Brown line (which are not sold at Florsheim stores)

They diluted their brand, selling cheaper lines and more casual stuff, and lost their cachet as a luxury brand, and eventually stopped with the top end stuff all together. They've brought some semblance of that back with the Ducky Brown stuff, which unless I'm mistaken, is the first stuff Florsheim has made in years up to thier traditional standard.

Of course, those don't exactly come in normal colors.

How do you feel about spending money on non-essential goods during the Covid-19 crisis?

  • I don't want to spend money at a time of economic uncertainty, even if I could afford it.

  • I feel compelled to spend to help small businesses that are struggling.

  • I reduced my budget for non-essential goods and I'm not spending at the moment.

  • Not much has changed for me and I'm still buying stuff I can't afford.
