Of course there is. They're much cooler (temperature-wise) than vans, because they do not enclose your foot. I actually think slip-on vans without socks rates much higher on the grossness scale, because of the perspiration factor.

Flip flops are good when worn how they're meant to be worn: part of a relaxed, simple, warm-weather outfit. The more casual/tropical your environment, the more appropriate it is to wear them.

Is that a picture of a lacrosse team with Bush? Flip flops are never formal. But then again, I guess that isn't the biggest mistake in that photo.

Flip flops is a necessity for me in the summer. Summer is all about kicking back and being ultra casual.

I was in Paris last summer and never saw the locals wearing them. I was in St. Tropez in September and no flip flops either.
