Ok I need some education:

I have regular wool navy and charcoal suits and am looking to get a flannel suit MTO for fall and winter wear with either a navy or mid/darker grey. A few questions:

1. Are flannel suits nice enough or appropriate for weddings, funerals, etc? I want to make sure this is something I can actually wear (luckily I go to more weddings/baptisms/etc right now than funerals)

2. Could I get the suit with soft/unpadded shoulders or would that make it look too casual?

Thanks ahead of time for your help!

It depends, but "standard" 11-13oz worsted or woolen flannel, plain and in conservative color (navy, charcoal or dark grey) is appropriate.

If the aforementioned type of flannel is used then it won't be too casual with soft / unpadded shoulders.

Unless one is referring to unstructured casual jackets, cut, ie.
padded vs un-padded, has nothing to do with fabric . As the
picture shows soft/unpadded shoulders go well with flannel.

My 2 cents - flannel usually looks better in grey than blue (I have both) - blue tends to be 'flat' and grey more variegated...

This begs the question: is it true that all bar mitzvah suits are considered birthday suits, yet not all birthday suits are bar mitzvah suits?

A very Talmudic question for which I do not have a "Responsa"

Perhaps emptym, SF's resident Theological Savant,
albeit Roman Catholic, can elucidate?

There are many beautiful flannel wools and I would say they are very versatile and can be styled as you like.

Colors I might suggest (for suiting) that have a wide variety of applications: Navy, Hunter Green, Charcoal
