Fitting into a 42R

Hey guys, I bought a 42R suit from ExpressMen last fall and was happy with the fit (after alterations) until I went to a store the other day and tried out smaller sizes. Im 5'7 and 145lbs and after I tried 40S and even a 38R I think the useless salesman at ExpressMen advised me to get a size too large for me.

Anyway until I can get another suit (in another color though), is there anything I can do to improve the fit? Also the tailor I went to didnt do a great job IMO as they totally relied on my (inexperienced) opinion on ascertaining what was neccesary to achieve a better fit. If more tailoring is a good avenue to take what are some reasonable places to go to in the DC metro area?

wow, with those specs a 42R would fit like a tent. I'd guess a 38S or maybe even 36 would be your ideal size. Going from a 42 --->38 is not practical as the shoulders are probably too big on the 42 and it's not worth the hassle and expense to get it close to a 36/38

consider it a lesson learned. I'm sure you'll look at the suit with disdain and regret from this day forth.

Yeah , I already feel that way too bad its my only suit (maybe it was a blessing in disguise that I managed to lose the matching pants

) . Anyway I tried a 36R at Filenes (Armani with interesting 'rough' texture) and it looked ok though when trying to ascertain if it was my size (by pretending to do a hugging gesture) it didnt seem to offer enough room in the back so I presume Im a 38-40.

Im getting a linen/cotton jacket from jcrew then maybe later in summer I'll try to get another suit.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
