Fitness fans. What do you do about suits?

    Hello everyone,

    I'm about to graduate school, and I want to move away from jeans and T-shirts to suits. The thing is, I like to workout and build muscle. That means clothes get tighters as the months progress.

    I have $5000 to spend on a trip. I was thinking about taking my girlfriend, but I'd rather spend the money on some new clothes, and some nice shoes. That means $5000 for travel and shopping.

    Questions:
    1. How do you deal with suits and a changing body? I don't want to drop a load of cash on some nice tailored clothes that fit perfect, then in 3 months time they don't fit my body well.

    2. Where is the best place to travel to to get the best bang for the buck (suits and shoes)?

    1. Spend at least half the money on the trip and your girlfriend.

    2. Wait until you are done "bulking up", then buy new clothes. OR You can buy them with a bit of extra room on the chest/arms, unless you are building a ton of mass, you should be fine. Best bang for your buck place for clothing is certainly not a place I would take my girlfriend on a vacation.

    2. I'd like to put on another 10 to 15 lbs of mass. Where would you suggest I go for the best bang for your buck? My girlfriend likes to travel, especially if I'm paying.

    Honestly, best bang for your buck is probably Ebay, but that requires some time and learning. Best bang for your buck from a store is probably Brooks Brothers (on sale). They have a variety of fits and styles in good quality clothing. My suggestion to you however would not be to buy a suit "on vacation" so to speak, but to buy one on a good sale (or purchase a Made to Measure one with a bit of extra room in the legs/chest/arms, 10-15 lbs isn't so bad), then take it on your trip and go to a fancy restaurant or event. She will probably enjoy getting dressed up for said event.

    If for some reason you decide to go to say Thailand, you can get some good deals there.

    If you plan to gain 10-15lbs make sure its going to be a weight you can and will maintain. Otherwise you're just talking nonsense.

    Buy one suit that fits and then see if your fitness obsession sticks. Even if it does, it is hard to predict where and how you will gain muscle mass as every body is different. As someone who used to be 10 pounds of muscle heavier in my pre-marriage and kids days, I can say that it will affect not only your suit size but also the cuts that you can wear. I used to wear fuller Brooks Brothers cuts (with pants butchered to fit) or suit separates that simply look ridiculous on me nowadays. For that reason it would be foolish to buy a bunch of suits now that either fit your current frame or are intentionally big.

    If you like suits, don't bulk up too much. Very muscular guys look stupid in suits - like dressed up monkeys.

    I agree. But then, as a marital artist and triathlete, I learned a long time ago that functional muscle mass - i.e. what is actually useful for a whole range of normal and sporting activities - is a lot less than many young men think is desirable. They of course, may violently disagree, but they'd have to catch up with me first... [​IMG]

    I would not get carried away. Suits are not worn that often in graduate school.

    True, I hardly see well dress guys (SF approve) really bulk. In shape, yes, but never meat heads. But I got to say Dwane Johnson (the Rock) looks very good in suits.

    ok, keep in mind that when you talk about "good suits" here, most people are talking about something totally different than what you are talking about.

    1. go on vacation to Thailand, get yourself 3 suits that you like and 10 shirts custom made. for most americans that is going to be better than anything any of your friends or coworkers are wearing.

    2. thailand is much better for vacation than hong kong

    3. if you are in your 20's and lift weights seriously, you are always going to have trouble with suits. if you want to be fit and dress well, set yourself some goals that, once you hit them you will stick to them for the forseeable future - that you won't keep going. then, hit the goals and hold that body for a few months and then buy clothing. those goals should include some cardio - for instance , bench X, squat Y, run 10 km twice a week, something like that. an inch added to your shoulders can really throw off the fit of a suit


    4. if, for whatever reason, you stop lifting, your body will change so fast you won't know what hit you. and then you can throw out all your nice clothing. if you lift in your 20's, stop for 2 years and start again at 32, no matter how well you lift, you will have a differnt body. the point - set yourself a ruitine that you can hold to for as long as you want that clothing to fit.

    I would like to put on 120 pounds of lean, pure muscle, and no more than half a pound of fat.

    I'm already very fit, but the time has come to achieve superhuman strength so I can dominate on StyFo, kick sand in faces, and so forth.

    ^ That was my New Year's Resolution (125 lbs, to be exact) in 2008. So far, I have doubled the metric.

    Eating five pounds of skinless chicken breast is a immediate way to increase your lean mass by five pounds. You can confirm this either by a water displacement or DEXA scan.

    How do you increase your lean mass by eight pounds? That's right, eat eight pounds of skinless chicken breast. Twenty five pounds? Twenty five pounds of chicken breast.

    Basically, chicken breast is a one-to-one map for lean mass. Technically, you don't even have to eat it...just carry it around with you, like in your pockets and stuff.
