Just FYI - I bought the brown 258 for the same reason (to hide stains) and it does fade over time. In some ways, I think it ages much better than the tan. It has faded in areas and begun looking very nice. I seem to get more compliments on it as it has aged. It is still brown enough to hide dirt well but is getting a nice distressed look.

Does it a develop a more prominent contrast between the leather and canvas as it ages?

Im "always" wearing the briefcase as a messenger, just so convenient. It has really comformed to my body and broken in since i got in somewhere last winter.
Im tall though, so I could imagine it being a bit large on a smaller frame.

Any pictures of the actual tote-- that is one wearing it?

I find the tan hides stains pretty well, 1 year old and still looks brand new.

The other side of the bag, which rubs against my body, has taken on blue streaks from my jeans. Doesn't bother me at all, it just makes the bag look nicely used.

Pretty much matches my experience word for word. No stains to speak of on the outside of my 257. I'm not too hard on it, but carry it daily to work in the city and it's been through all sorts of weather with no issues.

A red pen leaked in the outer pocket of my 257 a couple weeks after I bought it. At first I was furious but then I figured "*******, it's patina" and got over it. Sorry for the attachment, but I can't upload to imgur at work. Purchased from Crane's.
