longskate88, do you think you could post some pictures of your filson 256, preferably with some things in it? i'm contemplating buying one in my final year of undergraduate studies, but i want to make sure that there's enough room for my laptop/binder and maybe a thick textbook. i don't want to have anything bulky. ...or could someone talk me into buying the bigger 257 model? thanks for the input.
Here ya go, you could squeeze in a thin laptop in addition to what's in the pic. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to carry mine, it can get heavy with all the stuff in it, and it's a little bulky to carry via the shoulder strap since it's a rigid bag. I walk a few miles a day carrying it around our large campus, and it works. I don't carry a laptop though, and rarely any sizeable book. I use it more like a purse, it has water, food, sunglasses, iPod, phone, flashdrive, pencils, calc, then a spiral notebook and various loose papers. To be honest, I don't know how I would get through the long days without something to carry that stuff in. I'm currently beating the crap out of it (wadded it up into a ball and sitting on it right now, it's slowly loosening it's structure). I'd avoid the 257 unless you like a heavier bag, and will be able to carry it fully loaded. More room= more stuff. Minor thing, I like how the 'flap' on top is short. It doesn;t reach all the way over the front of the bag, so it's easier to access the bag this way. Also, no velcro is a plus. You don't have to snap the flap shut, it carries perfectly well with all the zippers and flaps open.

Hhhhmmm, I have been debating between the 256 and 257 for the longest time, but by the looks of it, the 256 can just about fit either a laptop or binder and textbook, and a few basic other odds and ends like wallet, ipod, sunglasses, etc maybe a bottle of water... but I suppose if you want to go to work with a laptop, even a small lunch as well, it's got to be the 257... I love being minimalist, but I'm just no sure how practical the 256 actually is... LongStake88, how're you finding te 256 practicality-wise?

I've owned a 257 coming up on a year and it's softened up a fair bit. I usually carry it over the shoulder, with the flap / snap facing outwards (easier to access the key clip on that side which I fasten my work access cards to). The other side of the bag, which rubs against my body, has taken on blue streaks from my jeans. Doesn't bother me at all, it just makes the bag look nicely used.

It softens. I also took it to a shoe repair shop and had them punch extra holes in the strap so that it rests higher on my back.

I've had my 256 for about a 7 months now, and I'm still waiting for it to soften up. I actually like its stiffness, but wouldn't mind a slightly more well-worn look. Good things with times, I suppose.

Couple new ones, after manually breaking it in more. Contents are all soft cover folders and books oriented vertically, so the bend along with the briefcase.

^ never thought about tucking in the handles like that. I usually leave them flopping around. I'll have to give it a try.

For the love of god, yes. I like Apolis and everything but I couldn't justify the premium just to get the color I want.

^^^ 256. You can tell this by the lack of a strap handle. ^^^

I used a 256 for about a year but found that it was slightly too small for my lifestyle. More times than not, it seemed I was always struggling to fit stuff in it. Even with a pair of shoes and some clothes it looked like a bloated tick. So I upgraded to the 257. I do miss the slim look of the 256 but now I don't have to worry about cramming stuff into my bag anymore. With both the 256 and 257, I have always struggled with using the shoulder strap. If I'm not using the handles, I wear the bag so that it rests on my side, rather than on my back. Here is my recently purchased 257: [IMG] I don't think this bag works like a messenger bag should. First, a messenger bag should wrap around your back, so that it is stable when you are riding a bike. If I wear the Filson like a messenger bag, it kind of hangs off my butt at an angle. Not very stable or good looking at all. Second, messenger bags are meant to be worn on your mid to upper back. Even on the highest strap loop, the bag still rests on my butt (disclaimer: I am 5'6"). Here is the 257 worn on my back: [IMG]

i think the 257 looks good but too big. maybe cuz im not that big of a guy (small asian) but i would rather struggle to fit things in a small bag than have an oversized bag that i dont use all the space all the time.

i agree about the straps ... thus like several posters above you need to go to a shoe repair/leather dude and they can punch you additional holes for like $3-5. i have the apolis x filson bag and had to add 5 additional holes.

ill post some pics in a bit
