Fit advice - Saman Amel roll neck

Hi everyone,

I couldn't resist and snagged this mid-grey Saman Amel roll neck from Mr Porter.

I wanted to get some feedback on the fit of the piece as it's quite pricey and I really want to get this right. Some photos below with a t-shirt underneath. I personally think it fits okay, but maybe I could maybe see it being a bit on the small side. What do you think?

The sweater measures 40.9 inches in chest circumference while my chest measures 42.5 inches.

Seems to fit OK. I agree it's just a touch trim, but I don't think it fits poorly.

Thank you very much. I wonder if it's worth ordering the larger size to try on which should give a few extra centimeters across the board. Although I'm pretty happy with the shoulders and sleeve length.

it looks fine. I’ll assume you put it on and then took the pic. My experience with knitwear is that it will achieve a drape once if conforms to your body.

It doesn’t look to be pulling or bulging anywhere so I think it’s fine. You could order a larger one but just keep it on for an hour or two and move around a bit. I think you’ll find that it fits fine.

Having now worn it for a bit more time this afternoon, I think I'm alright with how it fits, especially with the mid-section. However the only thing I'd change if I had the chance was to make the sleeves a bit wider on the bicep, similar to Drake's lambswool roll necks.

Anyway, can't have everything I guess.

Knitwear can be reshaped a little through a process called blocking. You can Google "blocking sweaters." I'm linking a random one here

I got the larger size (50) in order to compare. Some photos below:

I like the fullness in the sleeves and chest here but I think the length is a bit too much, which in combination with the looser waist, makes it bunch up too much around the hem. What do you guys think? On balance I'm leaning towards the smaller one from the original post.

I spent a bit of time trying both on and they both feel comfortable. The 50 feels certainly more roomy and perhaps a little more comfortable but at the same time I can't say the 48 feels restrictive in any way. So I guess it comes down to how they look on me which I know is really subjective and hard to judge from photos.

I took some more comparison photos, where I tried to minimise lighting and posture differences.

I don't know if I have a point-by-point arguemnt to make, but I think you look better in the size 50.

I don't think the size 48 fits poorly. But I think the silhouette looks cooler, more comfortable, and more flattering on the 50.

If it sways you:

If you can count on anything, it's that most men grow bigger in size as they age. Food is tasty and metabolism quickly slows. Add 10 pounds and then suddenly size 48 is no longer on the cusp of being "a little trim" but just too tight.

Fashion is also veering away from slimmer fits. Lots of stuff is pushing towards more comfortable silhouettes -- Raf, Lemaire, renewed appreciation for '80s Armani, etc. Classic menswear will soon follow, as it did with the slim-fit trend in the late '90s/ early aughts.

Personally, I think the 50 looks both more classic and more fashionable, as we're in this very weird intersection where classic and fashionable silhouettes are starting to overlap more. With some outfits, I like even fuller-looking sweaters, as I think it lends a cool vibe.
