So I will be starting as an Analyst at a bulge bracket investment bank this summer and need a wardrobe. I'm planning to use Modern Tailor providing the trial shirt I just ordered turns out well.

I was thinking:

3 x light blue
3 x white
1 x light pink
1 x charcole suit - extra pants
1 x navy suit - extra pants

Anything I'm missing? Any specific fabrics? Specific type of collar? Thanks for the help.

here's a long thread of what to expect clothing wise

that sounds about right. i did the whole analyst to associate route. honest truth is...no one really cares how you're dressed except your computer. get ready for some longass hours and a coke habit. it's a thankless job, have fun getting ripped a new one because you forgot a comma in the investment memorandum or cause your model was off by 0.0000001%.

with a 7 shirt rotation i wouldnt do 3 white shirts. 2 should be fine

no light pink, seriously. unless you want it to be a conversation starter, at least in the groups ive worked with

^i definitely miss the dual 27 inch apple monitors from my previous summers. Its hard to re adjust to excel on regular sized screens!

Hmm, light pink shirts have always been my favorite (I'm British but will be in NYC), is there definitely no way I can get away with wearing one?

haha you don't have to tell me man, I interned at the bank this past summer and know all about your associate making you feel like you're the biggest dumbass in the world for forgetting to format a cell wrong. What do you do now? If you don't mind me asking.

Dont worry what other people think and get what you like.

No one notices or cares what you wear unless its ridiculous.

Most bankers dress like **** and have zero knowledge of style (I'd say worse than the general population of office dwellers). As long as your dress is reasonably conservative (wrt to colour, patter, fit, etc), no one will take notice/ make stupid comments about how 'fancy' you are.

Also, make sure your suit pants are comfortable and breathable. Trying to get your balance sheet to balance at 4am with a bad case of crotch swamp, only makes your life more miserable.

You will be fine. Pink gets a bad rep as being a "****" color or not manly. I do not wear pink it does not go with my californian tanned complexion, but I have no inherent problem with the color.

Shirts: Do not forget stripes or checks. I think 2 whites, 2 light blue, 1 light pink, and maybe 2/3 check or stripe shirts with white as baseline color will be more than good enough.

Suits: Navy is a no brainer, I would substitute charcoal for a mid - darker gray. Charcoal to me is subtlety more "evening formal" than ""daytime formal. Just my two deuchemarks.

Dont forget at least 7 ties, a couple of shoes (loafers, oxfords), and buy some pairs of pants (Navy, Gray, Pinstripes, Tan etc...). If you are working in NYC, winter can be on chilly side, I would recommend investing in a long / top coat in heavy weight wool.

If you won't be wearing a suit every day, I wouldn't get so many white shirts. But then again, I do not work at a bank.
