For the panorama recommendation - I think the best experience is to go to Brooklyn Heights, take a walk on the Promenade, then walk across the Brooklyn Bridge towards the city

Since you'll be around midtown, make sure the 4-5-6 subway line is stopping at Grand Central after the steam pipe explosion. It wasn't this morning. As someone mentioned previously, check out NYMag.com for tons of suggestions. Also, it will be the end of restaurant week (just Thurs and Fri the week you arrive). Check out opentable.com for a list of restaraunts that are included. $25.00 (approx) for 3 course lunch $35.00 for 3-course dinner. Sometimes the deals aren't all they are cracked up to be, because the food isn't as good as normal, but often you can get a great deal. Check www.opentable.com for restaurant reservation options and online booking. And feel happy, everything is practically half-price once you change your Sterling to Dollars.

You're just in time to catch the musical sensation of the summer (probably the year). Patti LuPone is starring in a fully staged Encores! production of GYPSY. Details below:

Visit a new MOMA (museum of modern something).

P.S. Everything is 21+ in US and they're much stricter about enforcing it nowadays. So don't be surprised if they refuse to serve alcohol to the table that has teenagers.

I just stayed at the Salisbury last march, I really liked the hotel and I think you will too. They have a damn good free continental breakfast that has more items than most CBs. Rooms are nice, clean. The location is TOPS. You're a block from Bergdorf Goodman, and walking to 5th Ave/Madison stores is so convenient

You can cross directly from the Salisbury to the Parker Meridian hotel for a great burger at The Burger Joint.

Trains that go to Soho, East Village etc are right near the hotel too (I believe the train to Soho is literally 50 steps away)

If you were here tonight, the Drive-by Truckers are at the River-to-River festival downtown - free. Next week features Kent Wang's favorite, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings

Bumping this thread because I'll be flying into DC in early April to see the cherry blossoms then driving up to NYC for a week.

What kind of things are you generally interested in doing?

If you are there on a Monday night, Les Paul (90 year old creator of the Gibson Les Paul) plays a show at the Iridium twice that night every week. Tickets are expensive, $50 a piece, but worth it IMO. Guy is a legend, it's a great show and atmosphere-- highly recommended!!!

If you are a bit of a dork, you can pick up a Gibson pick guard off a guitar for like $10-15, and he'll autograph it for free. Could be valuable in a couple years, as you can just swap the pick guard on to a guitar.

I think since this is my first time, I just want to take in the city. Spend 2-3 days taking pictures in front of landmarks. Eat some really good, though reasonably priced food. The pizza place at the end of the Brooklyn Bridge sounds great. I'll indulge a couple nights in more upscale dining. I'm sad that I'll just miss the old Yankee Stadium but I might check out a baseball game. Might hit up Broadway.

There's already been a lot of good suggestions in this thread, just bumping to see what else people come up with.

Don't know if this is the best thread for this but the question of cool and affordable accomodation in NYC has come up many times on the forum. I just want to point out that the NY branch of Ace Hotel just opened and, as its siblings on the west coast, has a range of rooms that start from very affordable rates ($99 for the smallest rooms, I think)
