Well first off, hello everyone. Now, the first question is I don't know if I need a suit or a tux. I recently joined a fraternity so I need something nice to wear on sundays for dinner but because I am a student and my budget is rather limited I also need to be able to wear it to formals and semi formals which I will have atleast 4 a year. Do you all think I should get a tux or a suit? And what brands or stores would you recommend looking at? My price range is $300 give or take $50. Thank you so much for the help.

You need a sportscoat to wear on Sundays, a suit for semi-formals and a tux for formals.

Welcome!

letmebefell is right, but he's not offering any help on how to do that on $350 (which is going to be very tough).

First off....you're going to have to thrift or ebay for the blazer. You should be able to find something decent in navy for $50 to get you started....you'll have to spend another $20 at least on a tailor, so keep that in mind. You'll be able to wear that with jeans and / or khakis you already own.

Next, you're going to need a pair of black cap-toe or plain toe shoes. Those will go with both the suit, and the (eventual) tux. I recommend nordstrom rack. You'll want something conservative with a round toe...if you're lucky you might find some Allen Edmonds, but shoot for a nice pair of Cole Haan for under $75-100 and it will get you through a few years until you can afford better.

I was never in a frat, but my understanding is the semi-formals outnumber the formals, so I would work the suit first (something dark, but not black, since you can't wear that to a job interview), and save a few bucks a week to rent the tux for your first formal. Next year, buy the tux if you can afford it. For the suit, check out the rack, marshalls, filene's basement...and go when they have a sale, if possible. Be forewarned.....your body is changing (read: metabolism will slow down a lot in the next few years) and you're about to start consuming a lot more beer than you used to, so investing too much in a tux or suit can be a bad idea if you don't have it to spend.
