I'm traveling to Japan for the first time (from the U.S.) in March and would love recommendations where to shop. We'll be in Tokyo and Kyoto. For reference, I'm a medium-sized (for an American) 47 year old guy, fairly traditional in dress, would be looking for things like dress trousers, dress shirts, sports jackets, shoes, etc.

Posting partly to follow along. Don't know Tokyo well, but also going next month.

Kyoto: are you looking for CM? Couple things I really like in Kyoto:
Nishijin Textile Center - a lot of touristy crud but some nice ties and furoshiki mixed in.
Seikado - beautiful silver and pewter shop

Couple places I'm planning to check out in Tokyo:
Gyokusendo - copper ware
Kimura Glass - glassware

Grand Seiko boutiques are cool in Japan. If you are into fountain pens it's also a cool country.

Ring Jacket Osaka is great!

I went a few years ago to Kyoto, Kobe, Osaka and Tokyo. I did a bit of shopping in the various Uniqlo shops that often have things we cannot get in the US.

Isetan in Shinjuku
Hankyu Men's in Ginza/Yurakucho
Koenji and Shimokitazawa for second-hand stores
I am partial to Mitsukoshi in Nihombashi but there's probably nothing there you can't find in the first two
Not what you specified but all 3 Hinoyas and Americaya in Ameyoko for denim and workwear
Check out Beams, United Arrows and their various offshoots anywhere - I like the ones in Marunouchi which is a good shopping neighborhood in its own right
Maker's Kamakura for shirts

The Isetan men's flagship is absurd.

Bryceland's and Ring Jacket are within decent distance of each other in Tokyo

If Simon from Permanent Style did a Tokyo shopping guide, the trick with it is that it will have his Londoner's mindset - meaning, he would not be prone to listing the Tokyo shop for E. Marinella because they may have a shop in London, but you are not likely to have one in Anywhere, USA.

I think Drake's is currently without a home in Tokyo, a few years back there was a little spot in Ginza

Edit:
Paul Stuart is owned by some Japanese group - if you don't have one local, they are certainly worth checking out. There is NOT a 1:1 match of the US versus Japan buys, so you will likely see something different there even if you are local to a US outpost.

Didn't think I'd see Gyokusendo here on the forum lol. Very nice stuff. Ginza 6 4th floor showroom is great. The seamless sprout kettle is really amazing ($5k though lol). Placed an order for a normal kettle, 6 months production wait.

I haven't seen them in person, only online. But looks phenomenal. Excited to check them out.
