Hello,
I am new to the board and new to the world of fine suits. I was hoping that you could help me in my decision to purchase a custom made suit. I visited a tailor as I live in Atlanta and he and his son were extremely helpful. I was hoping that as I am not part of the 1% that the forum members could help me in my decision to purchase a suit.

  1. Is $2000 for a custom fit suit standard?
  2. Is Loro Piana fabric decent? It was in the middle price wise between Mercury and Zegna.
  3. Will a 2 button, thinner lapels, slim fit suit go out of fashion in a couple of years?

I would prefer getting a more modern suit as my tastes run to the more European slim fit look. This will be my third suit but my first custom tailored. I am looking at black even though it is not the traditional color. Midnight Navy would also be an option.

Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated as this is a lot of money for me to spend even if you think I am completely wrong! I would like to be able to wear the suit for Business Meetings with clients and social events. I am not sure if this helps but I do like the look of Daniel Craig’s fitted suits if that helps as a guiding point of what I am trying to go for.

Thank you in advance.

1. $2k for a bespoke suit would be on the cheap side for a US tailor. Inquire whether this is made-to-measure (they adjust an existing pattern to your measurements) or bespoke (they draft an entire new pattern from scratch). Look at examples of their garments and make sure you like the silhouette of them, as it's not wise to ask a tailor to construct a suit with a drastically different look than what he normally makes.

2. Decent...although opinions differ. Generally their cashmere is thought to be high quality, their wools less so.

3. Thinner lapels are a fashion thing. You won't find much love for them on this board. If you yourself are skinny then it's less egregious than if you're not so skinny. As this is a significant investment and, as you say, you're new to this, I'd advise browsing around this site for a while to try and get a sense of the suits you like before committing to a major purchase.

Daniel Craig's suits are fitted, but they're Tom Ford, which means the lapels probably aren't so skinny at all.

The suits in Skyfall have very skinny lapels and don't have much to do with the rest of Tom Ford.

You are in Atlanta. I would suggest that you visit Sid Mashburn. I have never done so, since
the last time I was in Atlanta, the store did yet exist. However, from the website Sid Mashburn
represents a good current interpretation of classic style. Not a "modern" suit that will look dated
in a few years, or less. SM sells nothing in your price range but it might be worth your while
to visit them for guidance. One other bit of advice: No ticket pockets- even Mashburn
has succumbed to this trend. And besides, I hate ticket pockets!
