I went to Katz's Delicatessen for the first time this weekend. I ordered the classic pastrami on rye, plus chopped liver. Best sandwhich ever? Very plausibly.

I would die for this sandwhich. Many times over.

Having been to Katz many times over the years, I must say that is one of the last few things worth ordering. Many other menu items have unfortunately slipped in quality, a shame. But I'll take one of those sandwiches any day of the week.

You've made Bubbie so proud. Next up: Pastrami & Corned Beef on Rye w/Russian Dressing. If you're feeling really crazy you can venture into the world of the Reuben.

I'm convinced you could run a very successful business selling only this sandwhich. You'd save money on menus, too.

Wouldn't 'Mafoo Fanstein' be snappier?

My wife had the Reuben and my mother had the plain pastrami on rye (no chopped liver). The Reuben was excellent, but I thought it still managed to pale in comparison to either of the pastrami sandwiches.

they should do this, but via street meat carts. Make it easier to get for lunch.

Trust me on the corned beef + pastrami combo. Some people like it w/deli mustard but I think that's sacrilegious. Russian dressing or bust.

Katz's Deli is disgusting and the prices are ridiculous. Tourist trap if there ever was one.

I like the pastrami but agree it's become a tourist trap, ditto on the 2nd ave deli. I thought it ironic that the 2nd ave deli charged something like $13 for a pastrami sandwich at the us open, a downright bargain next to the $13 crepes and $10 burgers.

Russian dressing sounds like an intriguing option. Will consider for the next visit

I hear this about a lot of places: "It's a tourist trap; it sucks." I don't know how many people there were tourists, but the sandwhich I had was truly phenomenal. Do you know another place in New York City that makes a better pastrami on rye?
