I've been looking for a sports jacket to wear over a t-shirt/sweater/button up with jeans. Since I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to clothes, I thought I'd ask the opinions of SF!

I'm still in college so I can't pay 1000 bucks for a jacket, but I'd like it to be of decent quality. I tried on this the other day and loved it but not sure I wanna pay 400 for it

Thanks

Thats more of a odd suit jacket, but could pass as a sports jacket. Notice the matching-color buttons. To me, a traditional spots jacket should have a pattern not typically seen in suits (usu. louder) or at the very least buttons that contrast.

You could do much worse than the J Crew one posted of course, but for that money I don't think its worth it. I would have a tailor measure you if you are unsure of your size, and scour the For Sale forums here. There are GREAT deals to be had. Just a few days ago I picked up a 100% Cashmere Polo Ralph Lauren sportcoat for $225!

Also, be weary of the charcoal color as well. Seems great at first, but it doesn't go with as many trousers (for some people) as something like a dark navy blazer would. Personally I have no problem with it, and a few of my jackets are dark charcoal (to wear with jeans and such).

Avoid full retail on the Jcrew, but you have the right idea. Maybe a cotton Blazer/Sport Coat would be more what you are after, and you do not have to dig around the bargain basements at Departments stores to find a decent quality one for the right price.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money and you're just looking for something to wear over t-shirts with jeans, you're probably better picking up something at H&M or Zara. You can get a decent jacket for about $50 and it will probably fit better off the rack without any tailoring than the J Crew Ludlow jacket.

Go to goodwill. You'll probably find a quality navy SC for under 10 dollars.

For the look you're going for, try corduroy. Something like the one from lands end canvas.
