First edward green purchase

I'd never heard of Edward Green before coming across these pages and so hold several Board members responsible for my recent bout of Imeldaitis. Thanks everyone.

After three patient months, I took possession of this pair of Ryes in burnt pine antique on the very elegant 888 last. Â

Thanks gents - I'm really impressed with these shoes and can truly appreciate why some members prefer the Greens over the C&J handgrades. They are definitely a finer shoe in both construction and finish. And now for some advice. I'm considering a monk strap for my next purchase (probably some time in the fall) and the two that have caught my eye are the Lobb William picture and Green's Westminster picture. For me, the advantage of the Green is that I can choose the last and get the nice antique finish - I'd probably lean towards the Edwardian antique on the 888. The Lobb's, however, are the original double-monk and that, in a way, has its own appeal too. Any thoughts? Any comments on the relative quality of these two pieces of footwear?

I would go for the Greens. Lobb is just cannot compete in leather finish and fit. Moreover, the William does not have the bevelled sole, so it defeats what little purpose, IMHO, there is for purchasing Lobb.

those Ryes are droolworthy. i have a pair of AE's with a similar style and color (the Sanford), except in a blucher. i need to develop some of that antiqued finish, it really adds depth. however the detailing on yours makes mine look like a booger.

Yeah - I too was sad to see my once proud AE's reduced to booger status as they sit on the shelf next to C&J handgrades and now the Greens.

The arbiters of taste have spoken. I'll put in my Westminster order in the Fall.

William is a great shoe, and I'm wearing my pair right now. Ordering William rather than Westminster would limit you to one particular last and would foreclose the possibility of EG's antiqued leathers. However, I think that a round-toe last like JL's 9795 is best for this shoe, as is a grained dark brown leather or tobacco suede. All-in-all, I like William better than Westminster, but tastes differ.

The William, with it's grain-calf upper, thick double sole and overall heavier appearance is an altogether more casual shoe. You can carry it off with some suits, primarily because it is so famous, but it still is in a different category than the EG. Something to keep in mind...

Good points A Harris and jcusey: I was comparing apples and oranges. I do like them both but at this stage will probably select another dress shoe and hence the EG. I won't rule out the Lobbs as a more casual (... albeit an expensive casual...) shoe down the road.
