Finding the Proper Boot Size

I was looking to add a pair of casual boots, maybe a Chelsea. However, it seems boots run extremely large. Is this correct? For instance, ShopTheFinest is offering a pair of Borreli's in size 7US; yet, the measurements are listed as 12 1/8 X 4 5/8, which seems huge for a 7US. Are boots supposed to fit larger than the avg. dress shoe, or should I find a pair of boots with mm that are consistant with my dress shoes? My dress shoes range from 11.4-12" (outsole length) X 4-4.2" (width), if that helps. Thanks!

Boots are made over the same lasts as shoes. But..........

Heavy boots are frequently made on heavy-toed generously cut lasts. Boots, particular the walking, hunting, sporty variety is usually worn with heavy socks. Hence the boots should be a width or two larger than dress shoes (which are worn with thin hose).

Boots have quite often an extended welt, (storm welt, split-reverse or Norwegian). So if you measure underneath the sole, they will measure longer and wider than shoes with narrowly cut welts. It is the interior space that counts.

I have no experience with Borrelli shoes, but some Italian manufacturers use very generously measured lasts (Santoni, Kiton or Lattanzi come to mind), Bontoni might be one of them.

To avoid mistakes, try on the boots using the type of sock you are likely to wear with them.

Actually, Chelsea boots should fit rather snug.
