Excellent condition YKK 256 won on eBay for $88 bucks.
Strong musk smell to it (my wife walked by and asked what smelled like dirt, then asked “another bag??” Lol)

Well done. That’s lovely, and an amazing bargain assuming the smell can be dealt with or doesn’t bother you. I’m sure others will add their experience but vodka seems to be a favored way to handle the musty smell.
We never see bargains like this in the UK :-(

Anyone got both the tin cloth backpack and the original twill backpack? I have the tin cloth and am considering the twill for more space. Twill looks substantially larger but Filson site suggests it’s only 4 liters bigger (17 vs 21).

And, if I were to change, anyone in UK/ Europe interested in a nice condition tin cloth backpack at a fair price?

I needed it like I needed a hole in my head, but couldn’t pass up this eBay find. Too good of a deal in my opinion, and honestly I needed the “classic” filson bag. Never actually had a regular tan briefcase. (non FRD or “altered” bag).

I saw this one. It’s a really nice find. Leather looks perfect on it. How musty is it? That would be my only concern.

Not musty AT ALL. I was shocked. It’s in really good shape. The photos on the eBay listing did it no justice. Total gamble, but it worked out!

My hypochondriac nature has led me to discover some apt products in dealing with smelly textiles. If it may be of any help; activated charcoal bags (Moso makes good ones) that you leave in the bag for a couple of days; the Laundress 'Wool & Cashmere spray' will also do a fine job (I use it on jackets or to refresh trousers that are not really dirty).

You could also fill the bag up with baking soda powder, and leave it overnight. You'll need a good vacuum afterwards.

Vinegar- and water mixture will also help, but I would avoid it (might dewaterproof the rugged twill).

I think you're asking about the rucksack. It definitely feels bigger to me. I also have the Ranger pack which can hold even more than the rucksack. I am going to put the latter up for sale. It's too big for me and not as functional.

Every time you post a new bag I want to buy it off you. That looks perfect. Great pick up.

Thanks. Yes, I do indeed mean the rucksack. I’ve pulled the trigger on one so the tin cloth backpack is going. I like the looks of the Ranger but wanted traditional leather straps and the two big snap front pockets. I have a trip next week so hopefully will get to test it out.
