I'm starting to think that they let me slide just because it was a tote and not a 256 or anything more expensive.

and you've concluded this how? Did you put your 6-month old bag from Context and put it into a time machine forward 15 years?

Possible. Or they noticed a large influx of filson orders with discounts since you posted here. They probably had already processed your order at that time, but decided to cancel all the new ones.
Anyway, I need to turn back to Crane's. They told me over the phone today a new shipment of 256s will be in this month.

I bought a well used 257 via ebay and it had several yrs of wear but was structurally sound. The only significant damage was a 1" length of the zipper that came unstitched. I contacted Filson to inquire about repair (at my cost) but because it had an X'd out tag, they would not repair even for a fee.

I asked them to provide me the correct dimensions/size of the zipper so I could source a replacement and have it repaired locally. Rather than provide dimensions, they simply mailed me a replacement part. It took a few months but a new zipper eventually arrived. It was a pleasant surprise and a great example of excellent customer service.

It is great to hear about the excellent customer service! I can't believe that still exists today! still scratching my head about how popular this bag is though!

That's sound logic. Can you post a picture of a new 15-year old bag for comparison?

Anyone have the small field bag?
    http://www.filson.com/products/field-bag-small.70230.html

If so, how does it look in person? I have the medium version and would like something smaller to just carry my lunch and a book, but I'm afraid the small sized one is approaching purse territory. Does Filson carry another in-between alternative?

Just placed an order yesterday for a Filson Red Label navy blue zippered tote. Now I just have to wait until 10/17 for them to arrive. If the bag looks as good in person as the pics I will be very happy.

ordered the 256 in brown, again - at full price this time - on New Egg (they have free shipping, Filson.com does not). Hopefully this one actually ships.

Is it not blindingly obvious that the leather is coated with acrylic paint? Full grain leather is only ever dyed. Stained, if you will. Never painted over with an opaque acrylic paint.

I hate to use Louis Vuitton as an example since I am revolted by that brand, but they use full grain leather and they are easy to google for. Notice the waterspots. Notice the transparency of the leather. You're looking at mildly dyed leather, not a thick coat of acrylic paint on leather.

When oiled, it takes on a deeper hue but the transparency remains:

Also, the flawlessness of the surface of those Filson leather should tell any idiot that the leather was sanded. My strap is about 1m (I did not measure, just estimated) and the leather has none of the natural creasing common to cowhide. It is actually more flawless than calfskin. Normal aniline dyed cowhide would show a hell lot more "surface interest".

So Filson uses sanded, acrylic-coated leather.

Wait, so is this a good thing or bad thing? As a leather n00b, I genuinely want to know.
