Decided to remove all the padding from my new 258. Much better bag now!

Better ... as in lighter, more roomy, better profile ... all of the above?

I try to trim as much from the bags as possible without compromising the integrity of the bag. I am also still thinking about removing the back pocket since I never use it.

Once you make the first couple of cuts the padding is easy to grab and remove. Once removed unnecessary fabric can be cut away and discarded. Took about 6 mins

Outside the bag still looks brand new. Ripped padding out first day I had it. Now bag isn't as stiff or rigid as once was. The 258 is a good bag with padding now is great bag without!!

You could try a diluted solution of vinegar but test it somewhere first to make sure it doesn't screw up the color. Then rinse it off and wait for the stench to wear off.

I washed my OG 257 in my top-loader with some washing powder and put it through a spin for about 20 minutes at 40C. Then I took it out and washed it thoroughly in the shower with the shower head, soaking it repeatedly with lukewarm water. After letting it dry for two-three days, I waxed the entire bag with Fjällräven Greenland wax and put Obenauf's HDLP on the leather parts. The bag actually went more stiff after drying, but softened up after waxing. It shrunk a bit, around 5-10 percent, but it seemed to have widened out again. the bag looks pretty good, a bit more clean than it did before, but it hadn't been cleaned for three years. The wax improved the water-resistance noticeably, but did not darken is as much as I had wanted, probably as a result of a lot of thin layers instead of one thick; i might try some Barbour wax next time.

TL;DR: Washed my Filson in the machine then rewaxed it. It looks like it did before, only smells nicer and is more water resistant.
