Maybe one day...!

Hey what patches did you get attached, and sewn onto what? I'm adding some more to my backpack (I have collected squillions over the years!), but must haphazardly sew them on myself given the tyranny of distance betwixt myself and Filston Restoration. Bought a thimble to help do the next one, since I learnt the hard (pointy, painful) way the first time that it jolly hurts pushing that needle through oil cloth! I'm going to chill outside with some needle and thread, a wee glass of Jameson Black Barrel, an audiobook and some patches to hand sew.
Jameson Black Barrel. Good choice!

So I ended up getting my Dad the Sportsman, but I couldn’t resist getting myself the Heritage as well. Here it is with my duffle and tote.

I must admit that I still don't know how to sew to save my life. I did commit recently to buying an assorted collection of hand sewing needles and thread for a pair of shorts I intend on saving. You can't find these things anymore, as they are over 10 years old and the styles have changed so much with the youth. I do however own a collection of morale patches, which conveniently have hook and loop sewn in on one side.

One of my humidors for my best cigars. The patch on the left represents one of the things I love most in this world; a glass of bourbon in one hand and a fine cigar in the other. The patch next to it is a famous scene from a movie I grew up with. I figured it was too perfect not to put into use.

Finally to the third and circular patch; this has been in my possession since 1991. My dad bought it for me when we attended the Desert Storm Ticker-Tape parade in NYC. I was around age 7 at the time, It was an experience I’ll never forget.

This morale patch is fixed to my current cigar club bag, the GR1 26L GORUCK. I think it blends perfectly with the brown 1000D Cordura.

Finally to the third patch, featuring Lincoln Osiris. He’s the dude playing a dude disguised as another dude. At least one of those dudes is from Australia, which I’m sure you can appreciate lol

Those patches are great! The parade must have had an incredible vibe to it, it looks intense and the kind of event that would give tingles. Neat to have a souvenir to keep for life along with the memories. The best patches and pins are always those with some backstory or meaning, rather than something cute found in a store.

My most precious are paramedic patches, both old and new versions from my home State and some from from FDNY when I helped lead a student paramedic visit over there. I also have a bunch from Nepal where I take students over to run a humanitarian medical clinic every year (well, used to, anyway...), though some of those are at work and not in this picture. The humanitarian medic patch from Nepal had velcro hooks on the back, but I unstitched that since none of my bags had a loop patch for morale patches. I'll just sew it onto one of my Filsons.

The rest of my patches are randoms I've acquired along the way, usually whilst travelling and hiking. They won't all go onto my rucksack; I have a big Poler poncho that I use at ultramarathon aid stations, and that thing is absolutely going to get plastered! Unsure if any patches shall make it onto the 257... if I did, it'd probably be the humanitarian medic one and one Nepal patch, both together on one end pocket. I've already a few pins on there as aforeshown, plus Sally the robot and a couple conchos on the strap, but might leave it as my marginally more grown-up-looking work bag. Rucksack for fun, 257 for pretending to be somewhat adult! This has reminded me that my old workhorse LV Tadao that I carried for years to work and various conferences still has a bunch of pins on the fabric strap. Unsure yet if I'll sell that old friend but I've not used it once since gaining the new favourite 257, and the LV's personalised luggage tag now adorns the Filson too...

Cigar club! I was going to say that it's funny how folk who lean heavily into one particular passion, like quality bags, also have other hobbies along the same lines of appreciating quality and workmanship, such as in whisk(e)y, cigars, and fountain pens. Then I realised it's not that funny at all and makes perfect sense! My other sins are fountain pens and mechanical keyboards, though on the latter point I am happily set with my favourite three boards for now. I am impressed that you managed to lever one hobby to indulge in another, i.e. cigar club is an excuse for a dedicated cigar club bag! :fistbump:

Also a fan of fountain pens as they are all I use. Another rather expensive hobby is Leica cameras. Never had a camera that was so expensive and I’ll now never be without it!

Oof. At Leica prices you'd need to never be without it just to bring down the cost-per-snap rate! I only just purchased an X100V. 'Tis beautiful, and I love the simplicity and enforced creativity of the normal prime lens. An entry-level Leica somethingorother was very much around the same price point, but the wee Fujifilm suited best, and I sure as heck could not even consider considering the fancier Leicas such as the Q! Truly beautiful pieces. To haul this thread back on track, I am seeking the Small Field Bag partly for general use, but mostly to tote my wee shooter around. ?

Now at the risk of further derailing this thread, you must tell me about your pens. I have owned many, including the odd holy grail Pelikan, Omas, Visconti, and Montblanc, but mostly lower-end stuff, but downsized nearly all last year and am now left with simply my Conid Bulkfiller Demonstrator, a Pilot Vanishing Point Stealth with stub nib, and a beautiful Conklin Endura Abalone with gunmetal trim and a stub nib almost too fat to render my small cursive script legible. I use it for titling. The shell used in the Conklin is pāua, from New Zealand, where I spent my teenage years and where my family remain, so it is rather lovely for reasons beyond its looks. ?

I don't entrust them to the pen slots in the 257 though. I keep a Lamy 2000 multipen and a Fisher Space Pen in those--all the better for writing on printer paper in the sim labs--but the Pilot & Conklin live in a wee elastic-banded pen pouch wrapped around my bullet journal, and the Conid through the loops of the Gfeller leather cover (highly recommended!). Come to think of it the pen slots should actually be fine, given both capped fountains are screw-on caps, but they are easier to move between bags with my current system.

Well, here we go.

I have the Leica Q2 which has been an amazing camera and really love it. Crazy quality pics and YES, you're right: I really need to use it a lot in order to bring down the price per pic. I came directly from an Fuji X100F - sold it for nearly what I bought it last year (minus the e bay fees). Considered the X100V but once I held the Leica in hand, game over. It's fun to carry what is potentially the best quality point and shoot camera in the world. May go with an M series one day as I try to shoot in manual mode as much as I can - just for fun.

My fountain pen hobby isn't nearly as expensive, but it's fun. My main daily carry is the Lamy 2000 with an F nib (F nib on the Lamy is like a medium anywhere else). Also carry and use a Pilot Custom Heritage 92 with an F nib that I bought directly from Japan (Japanese F writes like an EF). I also have several cheapers pens - a couple TWSBI Ecos, Lamy Safaris, etc. The TWSBI ECO writes very well for an inexpensive fountain pen.

Now - from an ink standpoint, I have probably 50 bottles of different inks.

Love that you have the Lamy 2000! I used to have the same in EF and miss it immensely so am awaiting Christmas sales to nab another, probably in fine like yours. Just looked up the Q2 - holy cow, that looks incredible! No wonder it can digital zoom up to 70mm with that gigantic sensor. I like the idea of manual shooting as much as possible, so once I'm better acquainted with mine (the box is literally still on the desk next to me!) I shall try that too. A decade ago I used to use Nikon DSLRs and then downsized to the NEX-7, but gave away the hobby inbetween and must redevelop some proficiency. I still have a couple of beautiful Billinghams (Hadley Pro and Small) that I should sell, since even the small is too large for this wee camera, hence my search for the Small Field Bag.

I've been eyeballing these handsome sample Saddle Bags, both the black and the sepia (love that it's less yellow than tan twill) but the seller has not responded as to whether they'd ship overseas. International parcel forwarding typically adds USD$70 or more for something this size. I really like the style, but... is it just me, or is the inside Filson label sewn on crooked on both flaps?? Even accounting for the flaps not lying exactly flat, they still look wonky... o_O

Yes, both of those are manufacturer seconds (defects or rejects or whatever they call them). Filson takes a red marker through the label in those cases. You can clearly see the red ink on the tags. In some cases, the problems are only cosmetic (in MOST cases, actually). That may be why the tags are crooked. Which they look to be, honestly.

I use a medium field bag (model 2032, I think) for my Leica Q2 - it's just a wee bit too big for that purpose, but it's been a great bag to use for that. I did a small modification by adding buttons so it's easier to open on the fly vs. the buckles..

Oh I see! Yes, I saw that red but didn't look closely enough and just thought it to be red thread for that writing. Ah. Well that's a lot of money for seconds but they're still handsome bags, so I'm properly conflicted now... perhaps it's best for me they didn't bother to reply to my international shipping question!

Thanks! Very rare you get to see tanks and military aircraft rolling through Manhattan, we were in my dads office throwing paper out the 8th story window. It’s a memory I’ll hold onto forever, as much as I can remember.

Awesome patch collection! Love the Coney Island NY patch. I grew up with that place actually. It might interest you to learn that my mom was an EMT while I was a kid back in the mid 80’s and early 90’s. I would routinely watch her go out on calls and sometimes ride along with her in the ambulance.

That Rucksack is going to look incredible when you’re done! You should definitely add more to the #257. Great thing about that briefcase is the rigidity and the surface area, the medic patches would suit it perfectly and stand out all the more.

Closing out with my morale patch collection, I wanted to share these last two and another on my wishlist. This is my IFAK that I built to use at the range. It’s compact enough to fit inside the middle outside pocket of a #258. The patch is my Blood Type and a visual sign of the kit to anyone not in the know of its whereabouts. It’s a standard military issue with an attached tourniquet.

Speaking of Top Gun...This is the morale patch on my wishlist. It’s a rare issue that I’ve been searching over a year for. It’s a line from the adult animated series Archer. Its going on my cigar lounge GORUCK once I acquire it.

A little misinformation here @OtterMeanGreen I am pretty sure you will know why. At least they used their own pictures....

Filson Tote

Also a little pissed at this prick for not even responding to my request to remove my pictures. If you are on here or are reading this, crap move my friend.

My Filson Bag Pictures

Haha I saw that over the weekend actually. Even though I’ve moved on from the Talon 260, i still feel like it’s guardian :fonz: . I mean it was in my OCD care for almost 2 years. That being said I was sad to see that it was only kept for a month and also to see it in the current state; with the condition of the beautiful Talon leather.

I see that the seller using your intellectual property ended the listing, so hopefully he got the message. Although the fact that he didn’t know (or care) that it wasn’t cool is a problem in of itself.

Fun fact for you pen folk @BLNDRWMN and @mgrennier : my father was managing director of Parker at one stage. I have a much loved Sonnet set that saw me through University and 4 super rare limited edition Duofold sets which have never been out of the boxes!

Not to hijack but is there a "definitive" Filson bag appropriate for an 18th birthday gift for my son, who is an avid outdoorsman and appreciates classic and timeless things? I was thinking about the 48-Hour Duffle but the Sportsman or Heritage Sportsman seems fitting as well. Thanks for any suggestions.
