Thrift thread recommended posting this here to get my questions answered. Saved this bag at my local bins, trying to determine age of it. Incredible patina on it, don't know if its from being old or just used hard. Suspect it is more of latter than former, but haven't handled anything but new Filson bags, so not sure. Also, is there a model name or number for this? Thanks in advance.

That looks like a medium field bag from the 90s. I don’t know the model number but Filson still makes it today. If you google “Filson medium field bag” you will find it. Thanks for the photos-love the patina and and the wear from the years of use.

I think it’s a medium field bag. Model 232. Great bag. I have one that I barely use but many on here love them!

Any little white tag seen in the back slip pocket?
Those would have a build date.

That is without question the Medium Field Bag No.232. If there is no included white tag, then the date of build is hard to determine because of sans zipper, and the leather is very well loved...to say the least. It also appears to be waxed, so the contrast between leather and twill is blurred. I can't outright say it's a first edition, even with the absence of the white tag and padless shoulder strap, considering the early to mid YKK Era featured that strap. It's also worth noting that it could be a Talon Era even if the white tag is or isn't included; there was at least one year before the YKK Era that featured this anomaly. However all that being said, it would be so much easier if the tag was included, as it would take all the guess work out.

Many people often get it confused with the #240 Small Carry On. The most noticeable telltale difference is the zipper, which the Field Bag doesn't feature.

Strangely enough, the No.232 is referred to as "Medium", however it's fraternal twin (the No.240) is referred to as "Small". Speaking of "Small", here is the No.230 Small Field Bag. Whomever at Filson made these designations must've been drunk at the time, because they make very little sense.

I think you mentioned that you found it at a thrift shop. Inquiring minds want to know how much you paid for it!

Are some of those bags one-offs there in Seattle? I see that they do restorations there, but many in those photos seem new and are in colourways unavailable online. I think I'd be lost for hours in there, and walk out with a bunch of things I never knew that I 'needed'!

Most of the bags I took pictures of are limited quantity or one-off that are done by the Filson Restoration Department. The guys there do a great job of using different materials and colors.

They will also sew on patches on bags, to make things really unique (Which might have been why I was there in the first place ?).

If you ever get a chance to visit, it’s worth it.

Hey what patches did you get attached, and sewn onto what? I'm adding some more to my backpack (I have collected squillions over the years!), but must haphazardly sew them on myself given the tyranny of distance betwixt myself and Filston Restoration. Bought a thimble to help do the next one, since I learnt the hard (pointy, painful) way the first time that it jolly hurts pushing that needle through oil cloth! I'm going to chill outside with some needle and thread, a wee glass of Jameson Black Barrel, an audiobook and some patches to hand sew.

Yeah. Yeah. Show us the patches, please! I too have a bunch of them and have been so slow putting them on things.

Did they have any true restoration department bags or are they only really doing the workshops stuff now?
