This one made me chuckle a bit. It's a YKK Era No.246 in Tan that has received "an extremely rare hard to find washed" treatment from a Denim retailer in NYC.

I don't know about you but in the Filson community this is called "forced patina" and it isn't exactly a strong selling point. For a bag that has been claimed to only have been used 5 times it sure doesn't look like it...which I get was the point. Just nothing I would want to do to something I (and many others) consider to be a beautiful piece of luggage art.

Not even gonna mention the asking price.

This is painful just looking at because I can only imagine what was used to create that look, which isn't even a natural look for the snapped handgrip.

Not trying to knock this seller (well not completely) but I think this kind of thing turns many off in the Filson community. If it were an FRD 246 I could totally understand that price point, but it's not so I don't

Some listings for your consideration or just amusement.

1. Filson Large Twill Carry On in Otter Green. Motto tags and an 1113 Build Date. Also a very reasonable listing price. I must applaud the seller for the work in the description, you can tell they did their research prior to listing.

2. 1950's Style 16 Forestry Cruiser with Filson Manufacturers snaps that we all know and love. Also a reasonable price considering it's condition

3. I recently posted on this topic not too long ago about how eBay works in trends. I can say as a matter of fact, the Rugged Twill Logger Cap that I recently sold hasn't appeared on my daily searches for over 2 years. Just after mine sold this one soon appeared. I will say the condition isn't bad, although mine was in better shape.

Not a fan of this one either. There was a large Pullman from some jean company in NY that did this on a listing I saw a while back. It actually looked pretty cool, this one is meh.

Super grateful that I was able to find a journeyman!

But now I’m reading old posts about how the first and second gen are superior. Makes sense. As far as the twill vs tin cloth goes for most of the bag- doesn’t the tin cloth actually make more sense due to it being water repellent?
The one thing I do wish the 3rd gen had was the leather across the shoulder straps instead of the cloth.

Anyhow, where the heck can I find a second gen now?!
Simple answer? No, tin cloth is not more water repellent than twill. I can see why you would think that given that it’s more waxy, but the twill is so much thicker, I’ve never had rain soak through twill. Not that it couldn’t happen, I’m just saying that it’ll soak through tin cloth just as quickly if not faster.

Now, the one legitimate argument for Tin cloth over twill for a backpack is the weight reduction. However, for me, durability is more important than a few ounces of additional weight.

"I had an extremely rare and hard to find washed treatment" bag as it was a last resort to get the smell out of the old canvas!

This was that talon 261 that “we” bought from Etsy right? With “no smell” LOL I still have my tan bag and it’s still a beauty.

Thought I'd share my collection!

240 - Tan - Used through college mostly. Doesn't see much use these days.
246 - Otter Green - Used mostly for weekend type trips. I don't often use the should strap, though.
261 - Mackinaw Red - Most recent pickup! I've been loving this.

Just added a Journeyman- hopefully I'll receive that this week!

A picture is often worth 1000 words. I had a Rugged Twill Logger Cap that got me from Jacob Javits Convention Center to NY Penn Station in pouring rain. I’ll let the pictures do the talking here. Best thing about Twill vs Tin is the breathability. Head dry, no sweat, happy noggin!!!

That’s a 0.6 miles in NYC foot traffic

The Twill was only 12oz vs the Talon, YKK and early/mid Filson YKK Era’s that offered 22oz Rugged Twill. Inside was bone dry.

Happy and sad news to share. I sold my 1994 Talon No.260 to a lucky bloke in Manhattan. I'm sad to see it go but elated to know that it will be put to better use.

Welcome to Team d'OG!! You will definitely appreciate the way it will patina. What was the build date?

Thank you OMG.

Build date was 12/04. Seller said he bought new in 2007/2008 time period. He kept it stored in the original plastic bag that it came in and besides some very light storage and handling marks on the leather it is like new. Need to hit those couple of places with some Obenaufs. Even has a new smell to it. Will get some pics posted soon.

He also had several other like new bags including an OG 246 that I was too late to get.

Wait a minute...pet free home?

Sorry, had to bust your chops.

Actually our dog Chance passed away from Kidney Failure in March, so yeah pet free home. That's why I was away for so long this year, we were trying our best to help save his life, after he was gone things just kind of stopped for me. It was a hard fought battle and it brought us all closer as a family. We did everything we could, but in the end just making sure he wasn't in any pain was enough.

Aside from busted chops, I don't have any pets living with me, even when he was alive he lived with my Mom. My living situation and past job didn't allow for it, so technically the listing was on point.

This was the last time I saw him, coincidentally the last photo I have of him, he left us 6 days after this was taken. His 13th Birthday would've been at the end of this month. As many of you know, Chance came into our lives as a Rescue. We shared a bedroom for his first 4 years as a part of his new family. The first part of his life he spent locked away in a dark basement room. So him having his own bed was a big deal for him, even though, at times, he chose to lay on the floor (as he did below).

Captured the 257 in work mode whilst chilling with a dark lager at the busstop Bavarian on the way home from assessing final term student paramedic residentials. Storm season necessitates the emergency Blunt brolly, which fits nicely in an end pocket. The Thermos King is rather a tighter fit at the other end due to its shoulders, but 'tis non-negotiable (no coffee = no workee) and I appreciate the good location despite the squeeze.

I have a love:hate relationship with the internal pockets. I love good organisation in a bag but they encroach so much into the middle space that there is no middle space. I'd have preferred them upon the wall of the first section with sturdier backing so that they did not flop medially so much; on the upside I appreciate things remaining where they are put within each pouch. I know others here have amputated those internal structures but such a radical procedure seems risky.

The bag has become somewhat bedazzled, coming to me as it was a blank canvas (I can't help myself; you should see my office!). My friend on the end is Sally, vintage Prada robot; many of the pins you may recognise, whilst the luggage tag is off my LV Tadao that was my work bag for 8 years before moving from the coated canvas to the waxed canvas side. They really need to include strap keepers to keep the tails in order on these shoulder straps, it does rather flap. 20211017_151814.jpg 20211017_152357.jpg 20211017_153135.jpg

I am so sorry for your loss. Thank you so much for giving Chance a loving life he could never have dreamed of in those dark early days. You all must have been his entire world, but boy do they become our world as well and they leave outsize holes when they leave and there is rarely a harder decision. ❤
